Doctor SNES! (Video)

Posted: 27 May 2011 06:22 AM PDT

Nostalgia is a great thing. It can give you the best feeling in the world through the most simple of sense memories. Something you did as a child or in your formative years or even at some point in your adult life.

A lot of Doctor Who fans have nostalgic moments reminiscing about when they saw their first episode or bonded with their first Doctor. Some young fans that have only just discovered the show will look back in years to come and have memories of the eleventh Doctor as "theirs".

One Doctor Who fan has mixed future nostalgia with something from the past and come up with a wonderful take on the most recent title sequence for Doctor Who

…by reimagining it as if it had been a SNES games!

Remember the SNES? Before Wii's and 3D's there was simple side scrolling adventures with even simpler graphics and all the music to these games seemed as if it was written and performed by one man and his mono sounding keyboard in his mother's basement.

The rearrangement is a lovely little thing, leaving you to ponder that if Doctor Who had continued to be on television throughout the 90's, is this something that could have been real? The answer is most probably yes.

Sit back and enjoy the following clip from YouTube, and be taken back to a Saturday night at home, with your mates, a few controllers and a two litre bottle of Coke!

What To Expect in The Almost People

Posted: 27 May 2011 04:20 AM PDT

Scares, basically. And a surprise so big you could wrap your aunty in it.

To be truthful, we don't know as like many other Doctor Who sites we've been unable to get our hands on a preview copy, so you won't get to appreciate the stirling work that James Whittington puts into avoiding mention of any plot elements each week in his excellent previews.

However, certain other sites have been able to get previews of The Almost People, the concluding part of the story that began with The Rebel Flesh. In particular, we suggest you pay attention to SFX, who in their position as major site of note got to spend a bit of time watching the preview and then being as cryptic as possible. We've pulled out some of their more accessible hints below, with some speculation on our part.

The last couple of  minutes are riveting – this probably ties in with some rumours we've heard concerning the episode and the reason for keeping the preview discs under-wraps. Something to do with Amy's pregnancy, perhaps?

The Doctor has a great John Culshaw moment – judging by the clips that have already been aired from The Almost People, this could refer to Matt Smith getting the chance to interact with himself a la John Culshaw's famous interview with Tom Baker, which featured John Culshaw in character as the Doctor. Either that, or Smith attempts an impression of Tony Blair/Dale Winton or Don't Get Mad Get Dom/Ross Kemp.

Rory makes a mistake – we hope this means that he doesn't die.

Amy voices something that may have been on the viewers' minds if they've been following the series – could the purpose of Madame Kovarian (Frances Barber) finally be unveiled? Or could Amy spill the beans about the Doctor, or question how Team TARDIS escaped the Silence?

By the end of the episode you be left trying to work out when something that clearly happened actually happened – interesting… timey-wimey and fascinating! Again, could the Silence be a part of all of this?

We don't know, but we'll find out when The Almost People airs on Saturday evening from 6.45 pm on BBC One and BBC HD; and if you're outside of the UK, steer clear for a week – don't spoil yourselves!

When the Going Gets Dark

Posted: 27 May 2011 02:25 AM PDT

Correlate a Venn diagram between Doctor Who and 'Scary Goings On' and sitting pretty in the middle of the twin circles of terror and television would be Season 6/32, the perfect combination of all the traits of Who tinged with the futile, melancholy sadness of a Burns unit on bonfire night.

Darkness and television have often been seen skulking around back alleys in the rough parts of the neighbourhood – sending its characters off into uncharted territory, forcing them to look deep into their souls and face the horror that lays within – and Doctor Who is no different.

This season The Silence have garnered most of the darkness synonyms with 'scary' topping the list.

The newest addition to the lexicon of Who monsters have been at the heart of a campaign by several media outlets to out-Whitehouse each other or to simply offer chin-stroking rhetoric in the name of what scares children.

However the most honest and reasoned response came, unsurprisingly, from Steven Moffat when he commented on whether or not The Silence over-step the line of what is acceptable:

"This is the kind of fear that can be dealt with by a man with big hair and a bow tie."

It's a truism that runs through the whole of the show's existence. There is no problem that the Doctor can't beat. The degree of darkness comes in the cost that he places on himself while attempting to solve that problem.

There will always be new monsters, some more effective than others, but until the Doctor loses another life, the tension will keep building between just how far Moffat can push our hero out of what has become expected of him and the peril he places him in.

At the moment this season has the balance just right. We expect the Doctor to face insurmountable odds and to defeat them but also we've come to expect it to take a toll on our hero too – and the situations he has been placed in have tested him accordingly.

His death, a shocking moment in and of itself, isn't something new. It presents a new challenge, different from the one he faced last season when he was wilfully wiped from the universe (which is itself a twist on the usual hero's dilemma) but it's a challenge that has been seen before.

The construction of which is almost a lap of honour for this type of dark storytelling – perhaps it will be – maybe it's time to narrow the focus on to the characters.

Life in the TARDIS seems to hang on a knife edge. Take the Ponds.

Amy and Rory's relationship seems primed for tragedy. As Amy becomes more desperate to save the Doctor – going to such extraordinarily panicky lengths as shooting at a little girl – Rory has been developing more and more into a strong willed character, a person who, in The Rebel Flesh, is willing to risk his life in order to validate another's right to exist.

He maybe a nurse but he's becoming more like the Doctor. He's died and 'regenerated' so many times he might as well be the Doctor.

Rory the Roman has always been a dedicated, noble servant to Amy, possessing an enduring fairytale love for the girl of his dreams. Crucially, however, within this relationship that appears to be splintering under the sheer weight of untold secrets and quiet frustrations lies the truth in most relationships, the truth that warring and often contradictory personalities make for the best bedfellows.

It's this permeable sadness that drama thrives on. Monsters may occupy the scary end of most reactions to the shows darkening horizon but its this friction between its characters that makes it more terrifying to a child.

A jolt from The Silence might give them nightmares but the knowledge that their heroes might not be together in the same way again is a different kind of fear – shadows in Doctor Who are filled with monsters – it's the damage they leave in their wake that is far worse, something that Moffat agrees with:

"There is an element that the Doctor moves on from people in a rather scary but inevitable way. He won't be nearby forever."

The Doctor Has Shrunk!

Posted: 26 May 2011 10:16 PM PDT

Zachary Smith is the luckiest five year old on the planet.

As a  birthday treat for the Time Lord mad tyke, Zachary's father Lee constructed him his very own life size replica of the TARDIS which has been generating playground buzz ever since it materialised on the patio.

If that wasn't cool enough the birthday boy also got his own authentic Eleventh Doctor costume.

Mother Anne told the Daily Mail of the moment Zachary discovered his very own TARDIS:

"Zachary was absolutely gobsmacked when he saw it. He's been thrilled ever since."

Father Lee constructed the Type 40 Vessel much like the Doctor, using readily available material,  in just two weeks with a little help from Zachary's Grandad- and he's quite liking being the coolest dad:

"All his friends compete to see who is going to be the Doctor when they visit now. I have had the idea to do this for a long time as Zachary's such a big fan.

"But there's not many people who can say they have a TARDIS  in their back garden so I quite like the kudos."

And as you can see, it's well deserved.

Who Dominates Constellation Awards

Posted: 26 May 2011 08:17 PM PDT

No sooner has the Doctor dusted himself off after his BAFTA related scuffle with Sherlock then he has to face yet another foe at an awards ceremony- only this time, rather fittingly for this week, it's himself!

And the best part: you get to vote for your favourite… if you're Canadian.

As reported on the Doctor Who News Page both Matt Smith and David Tennant have received nominations in the Best Male Performance: Television category for this years Constellation Awards for their interpretation of every-one's favourite time traveller for The End of Time, Part Two and A Christmas Carol respectively.

The pair also face competition from Who guest star Tony Curran for his portrayal of Vincent Van Gogh in Vincent and the Doctor

The Constellation Awards, now in their fifth year, are Canada's premier Science Fiction and Television awards and have a history of lavished nominations upon Doctor Who which has picked up the Best Science Fiction Television Series award three times in the last four years.

Karen Gillan has also received the nod for Best Female Performance: Television for Amy's Choice (really?) where she's up against a fellow Who alumni in the shapely form of Katherine Jenkins for her role in A Christmas Carol.

As if that wasn't enough the programme has also received recognition for the work of Murray Gold in the Best Technical Accomplishment and for both Steven Moffat and Richard Curtis for their scripts for The Eleventh Hour and Vincent and the Doctor in the Best Overall 2010 Science Fiction Film or Television Script catagory.

For the full list of nominations and detail on how to vote head over to the awards website.
