| The Rebel Flesh: Australian ratings Posted: 28 May 2011 02:05 PM PDT The Rebel Flesh has debuted in Australia to excellent ratings. TV Tonight reports that the episode averaged 823,000 viewers in the five major capital cities. Again, it won its national timeslot, was the top-rating drama of the day and the fourth highest rating programme for the day overall (only beaten by news programs). The corresponding Confidential Cutdown also rated a respectable 598,000 viewers in the five major capitals. These overnight figures, however, do not include regional, rural and time-shifted viewers and hence significantly understate the actual national ratings. | ||

| Posted: 28 May 2011 08:28 AM PDT Out Of This World is a new exhibition that has opened at the British Library in London, and explores science fiction in its many forms. The exhibition will trace the development of the genre from True History by Lucian of Samosata written in the 2nd century AD to the recent writings of Cory Doctorow and China Miéville, showing how science fiction has turnednfrom a niche into a global phenomenon. It features a selection of the Library's extensive collection in this genre, from some of the earliest science fiction manuscripts like Thomas More's Utopia from 1516 through to modern best-sellers like The Time Traveller's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger; these are supplemented with exhibits covering film, television and radio. Visitors to the exhibition will discover an interactive space based on 'other worlds' presented by science fiction. These will include: Alien Worlds; Future Worlds; Parallel Worlds; Virtual Worlds; the End of the World and the Perfect World. Each area will draw on a variety of exhibits, multi-media interactives, film and sound to experience new surroundings and ask questions such as: 'who are we?', 'why are we here?', 'what is reality?' and 'what does the future hold?' The guest curator of the exhibition, Andy Sawyer (Director of Science Fiction Studies, University of Liverpool), said: There is no doubt that science fiction has split literary experts for decades and remains a source of debate and discussion across the world. What this exhibition shows is that science fiction is a way of asking questions about the world, its future, and our place in it that has roots in a number of literary traditions and cultures. What we call 'science fiction' has a long tradition and will continue to dominate popular culture for a long time to come. Katya Rogatchevskaia, British Library co-curator, added:This exhibition aims to show that science fiction provides a window on the world and society in which we live today. It pushes the boundaries of our imagination into uncomfortable and pleasant places and appeals to our desire to understand a deeper meaning of other worlds. We hope that visitors' perceptions of science fiction will be challenged by this exhibition so that we can both celebrate the genre and use it as a warning for the future. Of course a project like this wouldn't be complete without reference to Doctor Who, and amongst the displays visitors can encounter exhibits such as the TARDIS, steampunk K-1889, and composer Francis Chagrin's original score for The Dalek Invasion of Earth. The show is also represented amongst the series of events running alongside the exhibit: The Art and Science of Time Travel10th June, 6:30-8:00pm From A Wrinkle In Time to Doctor Who and Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse 5 the concept, appeal and paradoxes of time travel have inspired many mind-boggling flights of the imagination. Join the creators of two superb recent experiments with the idea: Stephen Baxter, whose The Time Ships is a sequel to HG Wells, and Audrey Niffenegger, the author of the best selling The Time Traveler's Wife. Plus acclaimed science writer John Gribbin as the evening's authority on the theory and logic of time travel, and Doctor Who writer Paul Cornell. Chaired by legendary SF publisher Jo Fletcher. The Discovery Channel are broadcasting a number of associated programmes to accompany the exhibition, and there is also a tie-in book by Mike Ashley. BBC News reported on the exhibition's opening on the 19th May (video). Out Of This World runs until 25th September, admission free. | ||

| The Silence of the Weeping Angels Posted: 28 May 2011 03:00 AM PDT Moffat's crowning achievement to date was arguably Blink, the Tennant-era standalone that introduced us to some of the most terrifying and inventive modern-day baddies of our age; The Weeping Angels. The genius of the premise, that they are quantum-locked when looked-upon (i.e. statues) meant somewhere in our imaginations we could see our way clear to believing these things could exist. They could terrifyingly spring to life the second you turn your back, or indeed blink. And they could be everywhere. The second big invention of Moff-badness was the recent introduction of The Silence. Bad guys so sneaky they've been around since the invention of the wheel without anyone seeming to notice. A species intended to be the scariest and most original in the chronicles of Who. Sound familiar? There's a lot more the just their founding premise that these two antagonists have in common. In fact so clear is it that they came from the same writer's frontal cortex that under the lens of examination they appear to be flip sides of the same coin: The Silence are The Weeping Angels remixed. Consider their respective defence mechanisms; whether turning to impenetrable stone or being forcibly yanked from one's memory, both races are adept at hiding in plain sight. Both could be watching you. Right now. And you'd be none the wiser. Creepy huh? Then consider the less obvious complications. The Angels can appear via unlikely means; Amy nearly fell prey to a live one merely by looking at it through a video feed. They can even be conjured through just the texts in which they are described. Canton Delaware (the Third) was memorably wiped of his short term memory by a simple projection of The Silence in the TARDIS, meaning that they share the strange "nowhere to hide" proxy effect of the Angels. (Personally I think that aspect of both baddies was stretching things a bit, and was used to keep things moving in the Blink sequel, The Time of Angels.) Finally consider their weaknesses, both sprung from their greatest strengths. When those Angels were rocking the TARDIS back and forth in Blink and all looked lost, they were rather cleverly caught out by their own defence mechanism; as the police box phased away they caught site of each other, freezing them – perhaps indefinitely. Whoops!
Whoops! Wrapped up, slanted and executed differently. But underneath the ideas of the same writer are at play. Is it fair to knock the writing of some of the best Who we've seen? Or does the higher standard invite harder scrutiny? Discuss! PS: io9 had a similar piece up recently, discussing the psychology behind the bad guys rather than the similarity in their construction. It's all interesting stuff…
| Posted: 28 May 2011 02:58 AM PDT It's all kicking off in the Doctor Who world from today. At the end of tonight's episode, The Almost People, we've been promised a huge cliffhanger that will shock and captivate. This leads to the massive, game changing episode scheduled for next Saturday, A Good Man goes to War. In this episode, we're promised a revelation of certain secrets that have been keeping us in the dark for the past couple of years and you can bet your bottom dollar that River Song is the centre point of all the problems. With those mouth watering elements in mind, you'd think that'd be enough for the show's producers to deal with but Steven Moffat, in his never ending need to up the stakes in Doctor Who, has also written into the script the return of several of the Doctor's oldest enemies to shake things up even more! Monster Spoiler! The Cybermen will be popping their logical little heads into the mix to make things even more difficult and as well as them there will also be Sontarans and Silurians as well. Episode director Peter Hoar certainly has plenty on his plate. And is it just us or is this shaping up to be a Pandorica reunion, with everyone wearing name badges and awkwardly conversing about what they've been up to since they tried to save the Universe from the Doctor? A storm is definitely coming… The Almost People is on BBC One tonight at 6:45pm. | ||

Naturally, this gives Character Options a perfect opportunity to rake in some dough, and they're taking it! Adding to Character's already-extensive list of toys based on both the classic and modern series, the Junk TARDIS Console Playset is based on the original design from eleven-year-old Blue Peter competition winner Susannah Leah. Measuring in at just 5 inches tall, this console will fit perfectly in that one small section of your house that isn't taken up by Doctor Who merchandise: the kitchen sink! As you vworp in that direction, make sure you hang onto the included "flight restraint safety straps" so that you don't fall off, and have a look at the removable console panel and time rotor while you're at it! Keep in mind though that just because you can see an Eleventh Doctor action figure in the picture doesn't mean that one actually comes in the package. You can pre-order your very own Junk TARDIS Console Playset from Forbidden Planet for a reduced price of £22.49 (RRP £24.99) and it'll be shipped to you right after it arrives in their warehouse on June 19th!

| Posted: 27 May 2011 06:49 PM PDT A short-but-sweet interview with Rory actor Arthur Darvill appeared over at What's on TV earlier this week, with a few interesting tidbits regarding the evolution of Mr. Pond's character throughout this series and particularly tonight's episode, The Almost People. The discussion touches on the fact that Rory feels more at-home in the TARDIS this year, a "proper companion" as What's on TV describes him, while Arthur adds that his character's relationship with the Doctor has vastly improved since last year's stag-crashing incident…
By the sound of things, Rory and the Doctor are going to need all the communication they can get, because as we've been told all week, a huge bombshell is going to be dropped tonight.
The way Arthur's speaking, it sounds like Rory might have quite an important role to play in tonight's final moments. Could this be just like the first time Rory was involved in a huge cliffhanger? Will he die (again) trying to save Amy/the Doctor/Jennifer? Is The Rebel Flesh/The Almost People destined to be this year's The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood? We'll just have to wait for the episode to air at 6:45 PM on BBC One to find out!

The Silence didn't fair much better. You see, those who clap eyes on them soon forget but before they do, they are very susceptible to hypnotic suggestion. The Doctor had Delaware fix his tie as a test. So the next step was clear; hack a TV image watched by the Earth (the moon landing) and plant the suggestion to kill the buggers on sight.
