BAFTA Cymru 2011 - The Results

Posted: 29 May 2011 07:58 AM PDT

Tonight saw the 2011 BAFTA Cymru Awards Ceremony take place at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay. Doctor Who and The Sarah Jane Adventures were nominated for a number of awards, and unlike last weekend's BAFTA Television Awards they did triumph in a number of categories.

The Children's Programme award went to The Sarah Jane Adventures and its producer Brian Minchin for last year's The Death of the Doctor. Meanwhile, Doctor Who won two of its categories: Tim Rickett received the Sound award for his work on A Christmas Carol, whilst Mark Hutchingson won the Lighting award for The Eleventh Hour.

Other nominations included Music and Entertainment Programme, where Doctor Who at the Proms lost out to Young Musician 2010: The Final; Make Up and Hair saw Sherlock's Claire Pritchard Jones beat last year's winner in this category, Barbara Southcott (nominated for Vampires of Venice); and William Oswald was nominated for Editing: Fiction for The Time of Angels, but the award eventually went to John Gillanders for The Indian Doctor.

Steven Moffat's other show Sherlock did well at the Awards, winning five of the categories; as well as Make Up and Hair above, awards were given for Director of Photography: Fiction (Steve Lawes), Production Design (Arwel Wyn Jones), Director: Fiction (Euros Lyn), and the coveted Television Drama award.

A complete list of winners at the BAFTAs may be found on the BAFTA Cymru website.

Listings Synopses Hold Spoilers!

Posted: 29 May 2011 05:03 AM PDT

Ok, so we've had some enjoyment poking fun at spoilerphiles, but really, you lot need to be steering well clear of TV, newspapers and even listings magazines for the next 7 days (longer for North America) if you want to stay completely spoiler-free in advance of A Good Man Goes to War.

Steven Moffat has clearly built up this series of Doctor Who into an impressive beast of multiple plot threads, most of which have been in plain sight without us even knowing, so even the slightest hint of facts could unlock the answers in your mind.

After all, this is a mid-season finale with a cliffhanger that won't be resolved until later this year. That means big, bad, crazy things that you don't want to know, such as this snippet from the Sunday Times Culture supplement.

Before we go on: my old man and I occasionally play a fun game with the Sunday Times listings in the Culture magazine, called "Guess the Movie", in which my Dad reads out an extremely vague plot summary from aforementioned publication, and I have to guess the movie. An example might be "A young orphan dreams of leaving his uncle's farm," which you might find as the complete description of Star Wars.

Such vagueness did not occur in their summary for A Good Man Goes to War, however, which is why you will need click the little plus symbol below to find the small secrets that they share.

Sunday Times Synopsis for A Good Man Goes to War
Amy now has a baby, but she and Melody are held captive in the season finale by panto-style villainess Madame Kovarian (Frances Barber). So the Doctor recruits a posse for a battle River Song calls his "darkest hour". There are bewildering moments, but plenty of fun, too and an arresting denouement.

Remember, professional listings magazines have preview discs, too, so watch out for any screengrabs and spoilerific facts laced into interviews – in fact, stay away from newsagents, TV and the world wide web until the episode ends!

Who is Madame Kovarian? Why does she want Amy's baby? What is Amy's baby and is Amy's baby the same little girl we saw in The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon? How much time passed between those episodes, and just how long has Amy been kidnapped?

More to the point, how does the presence of Cybermen and other monsters tie in with this most awesome-sounding episodes, and is there more to the Silence than we were previously lead to believe?

Even more interestingly, what information was stored in the frontal lobe of a Judoon? Is there more information revealed in those prequel episodes than we previously thought? Has Steven Moffat created a patchwork of interlinked clues throughout the episodes so far?

Muppets (and Relative Dimension) In Space!

It's time to put on make up. It's time to dress up right. It's time to get things started on the most sensational, inspirational, celebrational, muppetational; this is what we call the Muppet's do Who!

In an inspired bit of awesome someone has mashed together the felt and ping pong ball eyed world of The Muppets with the Whoinverse and presented The Muppets as the Eleven Doctors!

Everyone's favourites (well not mine; where's Gorgon Heap!) are all present and correct; Kermit as the Fifth Doctor, Gonzo as the Eighth Doctor, Fozzy as the Sixth Doctor and Miss Piggy as the Third Doctor (missing out on emulating a famous putdown by Patrick Troughton against his Two Doctor's co-star Colin Baker)

Despite leaving out on that little bit of geeky in joke-dom I think I speak for most by saying these are pretty cool – particularly Beaker as the Tenth Doctor who is now finally ginger!

The Almost People - Overnight Figures

Posted: 28 May 2011 07:52 PM PDT

Doctor Who: The Almost People5.0 million viewers watched episode six of Doctor Who: The Almost People, according to unofficial overnight figures.

The second half of the two part story, written by Matthew Graham, attracted 24.4% of the overnight audience.

Although this represents the lowest overnight figure of the series so far, in terms of placing the episode continues the trend of all previous weeks of being the second most-watched programme of the day, a million viewers ahead of third placed Casualty. The UEFA Champions League Final: Barcelona v Manchester United took the top spot for the day , with some 7.9 million watching the match on ITV1.

More people watched Doctor Who than the Football during the period they were on together, although the overnight share was lower than in previous weeks. Figures also indicated around two million viewers switched from BBC1 to ITV1 as Doctor Who ended, reflecting their preference to watch the Doctor first!

Television viewing across the day was down, with many families away from home at the start the half term holiday. The final official ratings, which includes those who record the programme and watch it later, will be available next Sunday.

Doctor Who currently stands as the 27th most watched programme of the week.

Torchwood: Clash of the Nations

Posted: 28 May 2011 07:04 PM PDT

Torchwood: Miracle Day is putting 'The Special Relationship' between the UK and the States through the wringer according to show creator Russell T. Davies, who has said he wrote the show to 'clash.'

Speaking to SFX Davies said the show, a co-production between the US based Starz Network and the non-more British BBC, was pitched to have the new members of the cross Atlantic co-stars, particularly the swaggering blokey CIA man mountain, Rex Matheson, clashing like Kraft and Cheddar.

"Rex [Matheson] (Mekhi Phifer) is the most swaggering, confident, brilliant American, and Gwen [Cooper] (Eve Myles)  is not a shrinking violet. Put those two together and it's just combustible!"

The former Commander in Chief of Doctor Who was initially concerned that the move to the US would be too jarring for audiences after three seasons of Cardiff based tomfoolery:

"I did wonder about that. Is it gonna look strange when the rushes come in, is it gonna be this weird combination?'

Fans need not worry that the shift to the States will have changed there beloved show. Despite all the excitement of a trip abroad the show will still be as Torchwood as standing on a high ledge and looking moody:

"It's literally the same show, but [it] transplants itself to America. It's absolutely based on the story, so we haven't had to relaunch it."

Though you can bet your bottom dolar/pound on there being a few 'meet and greet' scenes for Captain Jack (John Barrowman) and Gwen when the show airs in the US on the 8th July on the Starz network.

However there has been no official air date for the UK from the BBC for the so far.
