Vworp 2 & Weetabix

Posted: 30 May 2011 05:01 AM PDT

We're delighted to be able to reveal a few details for the upcoming Vworp Vworp! 2 fanzine, the sequel to the amazing Vworp Vworp! 'zine released back in 2009.

As you can see, this stunning image evokes memories of 1980s Doctor Who and the finished magazine will feature a cast of many, including Tom Baker, Colin Baker, Dave Gibbons, Paul Cornell, Paul Neary, Dez Skinn, Lee Sullivan and many others as the magazine focuses on various elements of Doctor Who Magazine and its legendary strip.

Regular Kasterborous readers may recall that Vworp Vworp! editor Gareth Kavangh shared with us a few snippets in a recent podKast, including the appearance of legendary Dalek Killer Abslom Daak in the new Vworp Vworp!. If that isn't worth purchasing the magazine upon release, I don't know what is!

However, we're still a few months from publication at present, and Gareth Kavanagh and his Vworp Vworp! colleague Colin Brockhurst require a little help. If you recall, the original magazine had some marvellous Doctor Who transfers on the cover, evoking the original first issue of Doctor Who Weekly.

Well it seems that this time around, and in a completely unrelated sense, the magazine are planning to feature a gift with a connection to the Doctor Who games Weetabix gave away in the late 1970s, and in particular Gareth and Colin are looking for a copy of the detailed instructions found printed on the inside of the packets.

If you can help (perhaps a detailed photo or scan of the item), drop me a line at christian@kasterborous.com and we'll make sure Colin and Gareth have everything they need to make Vworp Vworp! #2 as great as the first!

Hardwick Hooks the Beeb

Posted: 30 May 2011 03:17 AM PDT

The Craig Ferguson/Chris Hardwick Whoniverse saga that's taken place over the past year has been an interesting one to follow.

It all started when Hardwick, the main man behind the smash hit that is the Nerdist Podcast, was invited onto Ferguson's Late Late Show last summer, and the pair somewhat unexpectedly started geeking out over a certain timey-wimey madman with a box. Hardwick then invited Matt Smith onto his podcast, which was soon followed by a simultaneous appearance of both Smith and Hardwick on Ferguson's show, a report by Hardwick from this year's Gallifrey One convention that also popped up on The Late Late Show, and even an amusing video exchange between the TARDIS acting trio and Hardwick which you should definitely check out if you haven't seen it.

At last it seems we have come to the culmination (and likely continuation) of all this madness, as it has now been announced that Hardwick is being converted into a TV host on BBC America! While this news may not be directly related to Doctor Who, it's doubtless that our favorite show is largely responsible for this next step in Hardwick's career, and the man admitted as much himself to The Hollywood Reporter

"I think this all came about because for the last 14 months, I have not shut up about Doctor Who. [Laughs] I actually hired a specific Doctor Who blogger for Nerdist.com. It turned out that Devin Johnson, who works for BBC, I had sort of casually thrown out last May, 'Hey, I sure would love to get the new Doctor, Matt Smith, on my podcast,' and he wrote back pretty quickly and said, 'I will do my best to make that happen.' And he actually made it happen.

"Then Craig Ferguson – who is a fellow Doctor Who-phile – asked me if I wanted to come on the episode that he had Matt Smith on of his show and it was one Who-related thing after another. [BBC America] said, 'What do you want to do?' I said, 'Well, I have this podcast, it'd be fun to make a TV show out of it.' They said, 'We have this Ministry of Laughs thing, what if we mashed them all together?' I said, 'I like the way you think, BBC America!' It is probably the best thing that's come out of rampant fanaticism, for being a superfan."

For our readers whose televisions can't pick up BBC America, or who just aren't aware, Ministry of Laughs is the network's new two-hour scheduling "zone" placing comedy programming like The Inbetweeners and Come Fly With Me in one place with intro and bridge sequences from Hardwick. For our readers who are in BBC America territory, Ministry of Laughs premieres on Saturday, June 18th at 10 PM ET/PT, or 9 PM Central/Mountain.

On the offchance that Chris Hardwick is a Kasterborous reader and is therefore looking at this sentence, we wish him all the best on his new gig!

Kasterborous Editor Philed!

Posted: 30 May 2011 12:46 AM PDT

In a surprising email earlier this year, I was invited to take part in an interview with Jason Peverett, whose blog The Peverett Phile has featured on Kasterborous numerous times in the past when it featured Doctor Who-related content.

The purpose of the interview? Why, Ultimate Regeneration, of course, which is still on sale here on Kasterborous for a very reasonable £14.99 (you can also purchase signed copies in person or via the web from who-ray.co.uk).

Here's a snippet:

I was thinking of putting together a Peverett Phile book pheaturing all my interviews but then thought why would anybody buy it if they can read it for free on the web. Did that cross your mind as well?

"Ultimate Regeneration" is around 40-50% original content – there is a running narrative throughout from before "Rose" right through to the end of "The End of Time, Part 2″, covering form time to time press reaction, fan reaction, etc. Also a small number of reviews were unsuitable to be featured as originally presented, so we substituted these, as well as adding in some additonal material concerning Torchwood, Mickey Smith, Donna Noble and more. Additionally it isn't just me writing the reviews, we've got contributions from Kasterborous Associate Editor Brian A. Terranova, Kopic's "Doctor Who" News administrator Simon R. Mills, and Gareth Kavanagh of "Vworp Vworp!" So it's more than just a "blog in a book" which is why I think it's done so well – we've sold just over 100 copies so far which I'm delighted with.

I must say, it was quite a shock to be asked, but it was one of the most enjoyable things I've been asked to do since starting Kasterborous. Jason asked me some great questions, we had a nice chat about music and all in all, I think it turned out quite well.

Head over to The Peverett Phile to read the full interview, which starts around half way down the page.

Massive thanks to Jason, whose blog is always worth a read!

The Almost People - Appreciation Index

Posted: 29 May 2011 11:57 PM PDT

Doctor Who: The Almost PeopleDoctor Who: The Almost People had an Appreciation Index or AI score of 86, once more putting into the excellent category. The score was one of the highest of the day.

The Sunday evening BBC Three repeat had 0.39 million watching, a 1.6% share of the audience.

Sunday night was a much stronger night than Saturday in terms of overnight figures, with 4 programmes rating higher than Doctor Who, pushing the programme down into 32nd place for the week.

Britain's Got Talent was the highest rated show of the week with 10.3 million watching.

The official figures will be published next Monday which should see Doctor Who rise considerably in the weekly chart.

The Almost People

Posted: 29 May 2011 11:40 PM PDT

"Would you like a jelly baby?" In normal circumstances, hearing the Eleventh Doctor utter these oh-so-precious words would give Doctor Who fans a small thrill of delight. At the start of The Almost People, we hear the Fourth Doctor's voice spoken by the Eleventh Doctor's doppelganger, and it's distinctly unnerving. This sets the tone for an episode where much of the tension is brought about by not being quite sure who is who.

Having two Doctors should be a real bonus, we should feel reassured that our hero is working with doubled genius towards a happy resolution. The Doctor is, as he explains to Amy: "an optimist. A hoper of far flung hopes, a dreamer of improbable dreams." But only a few minutes later one of the Doctors has pinned Amy up against a wall, and is shouting in her face. Not really knowing the Doctor's true motivation, or actually which of the two Doctors is our Doctor is distinctly unsettling. Not being able to trust the Doctor is without a doubt the most scary aspect of this story.

What else is there to truly be scared of? The physical environment just doesn't work. The Almost People is crying out for a high-tech industrial setting, but for no good reason has been plonked in a Thirteenth Century monastery. There's corridors aplenty to run down, with yellow flashing lights, and doors that don't close properly. In a monastery. I just don't buy it, and that lessens the tension considerably. Then there's the acid. It's being mined, and shipped out to the mainland. What for? It must be important, because it's clearly very dangerous stuff, necessitating pseudo-humans to do the dirty work. Late on in the story we find it's not only acid, it's boiling acid. Blimey. Again, it's just nonsense. The accusing eyes on the wall just looked silly. The idea of the ghastly blob of rejected gangers is truly horrible – but again, I don't buy it. We're told that the flesh is programmable and can be moulded easily. So it would make sense that those gangers-gone-wrong could be melted down and reshaped into usable models. Without better explanation in the script, I find myself rejecting the whole idea, which is a shame.

The character of Jennifer Lucas requires special mention here. Initially sweet and vulnerable, she becomes the monster of the episode. She cleverly fools Rory by duplicating herself, as well as cruelly taking advantage of Rory's nursey empathy and kindness. She's a complex character this one (not least because there's actually three Jennifers in the story!), and a memorable Doctor Who baddie because of that complexity. I think it's rather a shame that she mutates into a weird Lazarus Experiment-esque beastie, as she was more effective as a duplicitous, seductive pseudo-human.

Jennifer Lucas (Sarah Smart) in The Almost People
The true threat (and ironically, the catalyst for resolution) in the story is the notion of revenge. While the gangers are fighting to survive, they and the humans can easily say 'it's us or them', but when Jennifer tries to convince the other gangers to start a war of vengeance, they quickly realise that peace is preferable. The Doctor is enraged by the callous disregard that the humans have had for the gangers, but he doesn't give in to that in the same way Jennifer does. The Doctor's faith in humanity is pivotal in this respect. His genius is in the understanding that a father's love for his son can show the way. The phone call between ganger Jimmy and five year old Adam is one of the highlights of the episode, especially as it ends with Adam's excited little dance when the Doctor tells the boy that his father will be coming home. Aww, bless.

The story is tied up rather too neatly at the end. It's exceedingly convenient that the Doctor just happens to have a vial of brain tumour cure to hand, and that the TARDIS is able to convert the remaining gangers into bona-fide humans. We already know that self-sacrifice is in the remarkable Miranda's makeup, so having her living bravely with her medical condition might have made a better ending. Or maybe I'm just a big grumpy pants.

Oh, but that cliff-hanger… I'm sure much will be written elsewhere about what's going on, so I'll not speculate here. But it's a corker of a cliff-hanger and no mistake. What worries me is that we're promised the mother of all cliff-hangers before the mid-season break.
