| Posted: 31 May 2011 01:54 PM PDT The London production of Shakespeare"s comedy Much Ado About Nothing staring Tenth Doctor David Tennant as Benedict and Catherine Tate as Beatrice, opens later today, 1st June, at Wyndham"s Theatre. The play, which has been previewing for the past two weeks, sees Tennant return to the London stage for the first time since January 2009 when he played Hamlet. Much Ado About Nothing was written around 1600 with the earliest recorded performances being two that were given at Court in the winter of 1612–13. In the play marriage seems inconceivable for reluctant lovers Beatrice and Benedick whose endless witty sparring threatens to keep them apart forever. Meanwhile two young lovers Claudio and Hero are to be married imminently but the devious scheming of a resentful Prince looks set to thwart the nuptials. This version is set in the 1980s and sees Tennant appearing in a white naval uniform while Tate dons the dungarees of a a beer-swilling, cigarette smoking, feminist. The play is directed by Josie Rourke, Artistic Director of the Bush Theatre, and runs at Wyndham"s Theatre in Charing Cross Road until 3rd September. | ||

| Vote: The Daleks are off for a rest! Are you glad? Posted: 31 May 2011 09:16 AM PDT This week's issue of Radio Times includes a new interview with Steven Moffat, in which he reveals that the Daleks "aren't going to make an appearance for a while". The news has led to a lot of discussion among fans, mostly because – as Steven notes – they are "the most famous of the Doctor's adversaries", [...] | ||

| Posted: 31 May 2011 08:05 AM PDT Poor Daleks. They've been beaten so many times by the Doctor they're official the universes wiping boys. So in order to protect their reputation amongst the chattering classes of Sontarans, Zygons and Cybermen (who are particularly catty) Steven Moffat has decided to give them 'a rest' for awhile. Speaking to the Radio Times Moffat believes that the Daleks would have 'trudged away' by now if they ever saw the TARDIS dematerialising in their neighbourhood:
But is The Grand Moff lying? Has he really concocted a devlish little twist? Of course the minute the Daleks reveal themselves half the population will quickly return their jaws to the correct position and begin synchronised bemoaning of their overuse again and they be right to. The Daleks haven't been given anything interesting to do since Dalek. Instead they've become the boogeymen of space and time popping up at the end of most of the RTD era series' with ever decreasing surprise. Though with last seasons Victory of the Daleks we were treated to the sight of a Dalek going incognito which is like putting a tabard on a rhino and calling it a dinner lady – we haven't been treated to the Moffatinisation of the Daleks other than a quick spit and polish on the old Dalekanium. On the one hand its good to hear that they may or may not be taking part in any future series for a while but on the other there's that chance that at some point Moffat may write a Great Dalek Story and return them to their former glory. What do you think? Has The Grand Moff discarded Skaro's worst, or is it all a cunning ruse, worthy of the Daleks themselves? | ||

| Radio Times Doctor Who Cover - 4th-10th June 2011 Posted: 31 May 2011 12:03 AM PDT Radio Times have launched another issue of their popular magazine, sporting a Doctor Who cover, this time to promote the 2011 Mid-season finale. In this week’s Radio Times – on sale today – when asked if the Doctor will face his most dastardly opponents again, Steven Moffat says: “Oh yes, the Daleks. Actually, they aren’t going to make an appearance for a while.” What? “Yes, we thought it was about time to give them a rest. There’s a problem with the Daleks.” How come? I thought they were invincible. “They are the most famous of the Doctor’s adversaries and the most frequent,” explains Moffat. “Which means they are the most reliably defeatable enemies in the universe. They have been defeated by the Doctor about 400 times. Surely they should just see the Tardis approaching, say, ‘Oh. It’s him again’, and trudge away.” + Radio Times is out Today, priced &ound;1.20. + Buy this issue of Radio Times as well as past issues from CompareTheDalek.com! [Source: Radio Times] | ||

| Download Asimov's, Eagle Acceptance Posted: 30 May 2011 11:05 PM PDT I've just landed from Phoenix, where the Comicon was lovely. As well as making new friends and meeting a load of wonderful people, I somehow also managed to get a lot of work done. But now I feel like I've got a brick in my head. But there's an urgent issue I have to write about right now. Namely, the July issue of Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine, in which (I may have mentioned) there is my new Jonathan Hamilton novelette, 'The Copenhagen Interpretation'. This marks, for me, a life long ambition achieved. You can read the start of the story here, but I tell you what, why not go the whole hog and download the issue? For between the very same covers you will find six excellent SF short stories (including one by Norman Spinrad, I'm in a magazine with Norman Spinrad!), a brilliant way to get a taste of the current genre, another novelette, by Chris Beckett, three poems, Paul DiFilippo's book review column, James Patrick Kelly's internet column, Robert Silverberg's awesomely wry column column (I'm in a magazine with Robert Silverberg!), an appreciation of Isaac Asimov himself and Sheila Williams' editorial. Don't take my word for it, take a look at the contents here. How much does all this cost, you ask? Would you believe that you get all that for $3.99? (That's £2.46!) And you can download it in seconds to your iPad, Kindle, Nook, Sony Reader or probably any other portable reading device. You can find instructions on how to do that here. Or go straight to the Fictionwise site which offers multiple formats. Or if you've got a Kindle, then here's the site on Amazon. There's no problem for a UK reader in paying in dollars, your credit card does the math(s). If you're someone who perhaps likes my work in other media, and was wondering if you'd like my prose SF, or if you're someone who'd just like to dip the tiniest of toes in the wonderful world of modern science fiction, then checking out this issue of Asimov's would be, I think, a good option. Sheila picks great stories, generally offering humane and identifiable ways in to the most extreme of situations, and the field recognises the quality of the magazine, with many award nominations. It could be your first port of call on a life-long journey, and I'd love to give someone that gift (well, if a gift can cost you $3.99). I've been downloading Asimov's for about a year now, and for me it's a monthly treat. And if you're wondering where that lovely cover photo is from, it's the Eagle Nebula, shown via the link in greater detail. You can tell I'm excited, can't you? In short, it's a great way in, I'm in it (I may have said), it's brilliant, please check it out. And talking of brilliant things, I, erm, won an Eagle Award! It was for Best Newcomer (don't mock) and I was frankly astonished to have beaten such quality opposition. The Awards were given out at the MCM Expo in London last weekend, while I was in Phoenix, but here's my acceptance speech as shown on the night... I'd like to thank everyone who voted for me, and when I get hold of the statuette, there'll be a photo. Anyhow, now I'm going to go and fall over. Cheerio! |
