Bernice Documentary Details Revealed

Posted: 20 Jun 2011 02:24 AM PDT

With only three months until the release of the brand-new Bernice Summerfield box set, Epoch, Big Finish is able to confirm the content of its bonus fifth disc: a DVD featuring the debut of the recent Dead and Buried animation, starring Lisa Bowerman alongside Miles Richardson.

Two video documentaries have also been specially commissioned for this DVD, both produced and edited by Thomas Guerrier. The first - The Making of Dead and Buried - takes an in-depth look at how Bernice's first animated outing was produced, with director Alex Mallinson revealing the processes involved in creating a mini-epic, with contributions from its star, Lisa Bowerman.

The second documentary - Bernice Summerfield Rebranded - examines the decision to relaunch the range with the Epoch box set, as the creative team discusses what new adventures lie in store for Benny and her companions. Featuring interviews with actors Lisa Bowerman, Ayesha Antoine and Marcus Hutton; Benny's creator, Paul Cornell; producer Gary Russell; assistant producer Scott Handcock; designer Alex Mallinson and writer Mark Wright.

The five-disc box set is due for release in September on CD, and will be officially launched at the Regenerations convention in Swansea.

Fewer Episodes in 2012 Explained?

Posted: 19 Jun 2011 10:45 PM PDT

Has Brian Terranova cracked the reason for the 2012 episode reduction? Kasterborous' own Associate Editor has been doing a bit of thinking about the current state of play concerning Doctor Who Series 7 and its likely scheduling, and has hit upon an interesting possibility.

Let's list the episodes from 2005 to Christmas 2011:

13 Episodes – Series 1
1 Episode Christmas 2005
13 Episodes – Series 2
1 Episode Christmas 2006
13 Episodes – Series 3
1 Episode Christmas 2007
13 Episodes – Series 4
5 Episodes Christmas & Specials  2008-2010
13 Episodes – Series 5
1 Episode Christmas 2010
7 Episodes – Series 6: Part 1
6 Episodes – Series 6 Part 2
1 Episode Christmas 2011
——————————

———
Total: 88 episodes  as of 2011.
So, what's left that we know of?

1 Episode Christmas 2012
13 Episodes Series 7

(These are the 14 episodes that have been commissioned.)

Now for Series 1 through 6 that's 88 as you can see; add in 12 of the 14 commissioned episodes for Series 7/Christmas and you will have reached episode 100. Schedule it right, oh say November 23rd (which is a Saturday in 2013), and the 12th episode would be the Fiftieth Anniversary Special – either as a solo 100th episode or a part 1 of a three part anniversary story.

Either way you have episode 12 being a 100th episode big event episode on Doctor Who's 50th anniversary!

BBC News: “Unbelievable, unacceptable”

Posted: 19 Jun 2011 05:36 PM PDT

BeehiveCity have run a news item over the weekend speculating on a strained relationship between Doctor Who boss Steven Moffat and BBC News Online.

This is all of course related to the recent confusion over the scheduling of Doctor Who Series 7. Let's not forget that this is a potentially difficult situation, one that would certainly benefit from being played out in private rather than in public, so we'll leave any judgements to one side for now.

Following the initial reports from the Church and Media conference at which BBC One Controller Danny Cohen suggested that Steven Moffat needed time to run both Sherlock and Doctor Who, the BBC News Online article which appeared two days later bore the headline "Sherlock's success means less Doctor Who in 2012″ (later changed to "Sherlock success will hit Doctor Who, says BBC One boss") focussed on Cohen's comments concerning Moffat's workload.

Beehive City have spotted that Neil Gaiman then asked Moffat on Twitter:

"Er… is it my imagination or are you being shafted by BBC online news?"

Which prompted the response:

"It's not your imagination. Unbelievable, unacceptable."

As followers of this saga will know, Moffat later clarified that:

"The scheduling of Dr Who has got NOTHING to with Sherlock."

In an organization the size of the BBC there is every chance that multiple agendas are being played out. We need to recognize this. However, wouldn't it just be nice to put this to bed with a definitive statement – released the usual way and not via Twitter – so that we can all move on potentially damaging comments from all parties?

We'll be discussing this in more detail in this week's podKast, available later today.
