Gatiss on Peg Dolls

Posted: 03 Sep 2011 06:58 AM PDT

By the time you read this, you should have already seen Night Terrors, the latest episode of Doctor Who Series 6 which comes from the pen (or computer, I suppose) of Mark Gatiss, whose previous adventures include The Unquiet Dead (2005) and The Idiot's Lantern (2006).

The fascinating Fear Her-style features some rather frightening monsters in the shape of the big-faced Peg Dolls, whose ability to convert victims into more dolls simply by touching is splinteringly scary, something that Gatiss is clearly proud of, as he told the Radio Times…

"I've always been scared of dolls and it seemed incredible that Who had never really done them. I adore the Peg Dolls – the stuff of proper nightmares!"

"It doesn't contain anything that throws forward to the rest of the season," he told us. Before adding, enigmatically, "except for a nursery rhyme with a grim warning…"

Ah yes, the nursery rhyme, with the words "tick tock" and "the Doctor" in it. What's going on there then?

Sylvester McCoy in the Pandorica?

Posted: 02 Sep 2011 11:23 PM PDT

As timey-timey things go this is quite a mashup – what if it hadn't been the Eleventh Doctor who challenged allcomers at Stonehenge in The Pandorica Opens?

What if it had been the Seventh Doctor?

In fairness, there is a certain verisimilitude about that particular incarnation being incarcerated in such a way, given the nature of this strategies against various enemies (Daleks, Cybermen, Fenric), so much so that it is a shame it didn't quite happen like that.

Still, there's nothing to worry about as thanks to an interview at the Dragon*Con event this weekend, Sylvester McCoy can be seen reading the "Hello Stonehenge!" scene from The Pandorica Opens - and for a life reading without any rehearsal you can see just how good a job of it he would have made…

This all came about thanks to the interviewer suggesting that Sylvester would have been served better by more polished scripts. Ultimately, I don't think he did that poorly with the material he was given back in 1987-1989 (certainly not in the last two series) but it is a fascinating exercise nevertheless!

Tennant Makes Fright Night Worth Watching!

Posted: 02 Sep 2011 10:33 PM PDT

It might not seem strange that a Doctor Who website like yours truly would say David Tennant is the best thing in Fright Night but apparently – according to the Daily Mail – he is! Take that mainstream press! We were right!

Still stick a fine actor in something that looks a little shoddy and they'll usually find something in the material to make it worth your/their while.

Take the potentially scene-stealing role of Peter Vincent (originally a broken down actor and expert on the occult played by Roddy McDowall) who's now been updated to a womanising British Las Vegas magician in this remake of the 1985 film of the same name.

However according to the Mail Tennant maybe a little too indebted to another Booky Wook-writing British womaniser:

"Tennant's performance is a little too indebted to Russell Brand, and I would have liked to see him given some funnier lines to go with his posturing, but it's an eye-catching turn."

Its a bit of an odd criticism- its not as if Russell Brand is now an acting style as well as person and how many other great performances have been based on impressions (Tony Curtis mocking Cary Grant in Some Like It Hot for example)? Are they criticising him for using an impression or the impression itself?

Other than that 'eye-catching turn' Colin Farrell (In Bruges) also impresses as Jerry the Vampire 'neck'dour who starts to make moves on both teenager Charley's, played by Anton Yelchin (Star Trek), mother and hot girlfriend, played by Toni Collette (Muriel's Wedding) and Imogen Poots (28 Week's Later) respectively.

This potentially life-scarring ménage à trois is made all the more horrifying when Charley's best friend Ed played by Superbad's Christopher Mintz-Plasse notices that a lot of their popular and attractive school mates are going missing…

So as vampire films go it lacks a little bite:

"Fright Night could be scarier and 3D does little more than darken the picture. But it is entertaining, thanks to superior CGI effects and, most of all, Farrell's knowing and understated performance."

However Tennant fans can console themselves with the fact that he does take his top off…

He has one last stop to make on his final journey - an old friend needs his help and an old foe must be defeated. But time catches up with us all and the Doctor can delay no more.

The fourth series provides ever more thrills and spills. In two special episodes written by Russell T Davies, Sarah Jane is reunited with another of The Doctor's former companions, Jo Grant. They're joined by The Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) in an alien-busting adventure featuring brand-new vulture aliens, the mysterious Shansheeth and a trip to an alien planet. The series also features fun with enemies old and new, including the terrors of the Nightmare Man and a dangerous journey back into history.

Special Features
  • Pyramids of Mars - included as a tribute to Elisabeth Sladen who sadly passed away this year. Pyramids of Mars sees Sarah Jane Smith and the Doctor arrive at an old priory in the year 1911 where the owner, Marcus Scarman, has been excavating ancient tombs and soon becomes possessed by the spirit of Sutekh, bringer of 'the gift of death to all mankind'. Will Sutekh the all-powerful be freed from his bonds and destroy the world, or will the Doctor manage to bring about his destruction?

Hope in this Endless, Bitter War

Posted: 02 Sep 2011 09:09 PM PDT

No, we're not talking about Madam Kovarian's war against the Doctor, we're talking about our own war as Whovians against time and the elements on our quest to recover any and all surviving classic episodes of Doctor Who that most of us have never seen in our lives. As the title of this post implies, we have new encouragement that there's still some Who out there in someone's storage bin for us to find.

The Doctor Who Restoration Team's Paul Vanezis recently made a house call to an Essex family who contacted the BBC after uncovering an old reel of Who from a house they'd just moved into:

"Myself and Steve Roberts examined the film which turned out to be Conspiracy, the third episode of The Romans. Nevertheless, it proves that despite what we think is a lot of publicity, people of a certain age just don't know what they have and in this case, the enthusiast film collector [the previous owner of the house] had been dead for ten years and his wife suffered from Alzheimers."

If you've ever seen The Romans (and perhaps even if you haven't), you'll know that Conspiracy isn't one of the episodes we've been looking for because, let's face it, it's been released on DVD and everything. But this print that's been discovered seems to be one of the original copies and despite what Paul describes as less-than-optimal conditions for it to stand the test of time, it has done so and appears to be in good shape.

And if it happened once, it can happen again, right? Except maybe next time they'll find those missing parts from The Reign of Terror or something.

(Thanks to Gareth)
