Doctor Who: “Tougher than Ashes”

Posted: 04 Mar 2010 07:31 AM PST

The latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine features interviews with the new Executive Producers, Steven Moffats's colleagues Beth Willis and Piers Wenger.

It's a great interview, but one that does spend a lot of time on some of the complexities of producing Doctor Who, even at one point comparing it to the quite different Ashes to Ashes.

Piers Wenger in particular notes that deadlines are a problem for the new team - who in many ways are learning almost everything from scratch as their precessors did in 2004 and 2005.

"From the point of commissioning the script for an episode of Doctor Who, it is more complex than it is on any other kind of show."

"It's a bigger, more brilliant challenge. Just the stories, by nature, have to be slightly baffling, but have a really rigorous logic behind why they're baffling - and they should be baffling in a good way."

Wenger also spoke of the timescale issues of getting the final two scripts of the 2010 finalised.

Meanwhile Willis - who has also Executive Produced one of the BBC's other big hits, Ashes to Ashes - remarked that Doctor Who was a much more complicated show to produce.

"[Ashes] was eight episodes compared to 13, which I think, just in terms of stamina, is quite a different kettle of fish."

She added: "And the post-production process on Doctor Who is just so much more complex."

Doctor Who Magazine #419 released today

Posted: 04 Mar 2010 06:25 AM PST

The 419th issue of Doctor Who Magazine was published across the UK today, and this month’s feature is an exclusive interview with Beth Willis and Piers Wenger, the new executive producers who, as we speak, are working alongside showrunner Steven Moffat to produce the 13 brand shining new adventures that will hit our screens from next [...]

More About Four

Posted: 04 Mar 2010 03:14 AM PST

Inside the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine (issue 419, out today) newly promoted executive producer Nikki Wilson discusses the upcoming fourth series of The Sarah Jane Adventures:

"After a hugely successful third year, in which ratings went up - a rare feat for television these days! - the fourth series has been planned for a long time, with scripts well underway, and all the regular cast rasy to return. It's a testament to them that the series has become so popular with young viewers. I can promise lots more thrills, scares and fun with enemies old and new, including the terrors of the Nightmare Man, the sinister Shansheeth, our first visit to an alien world, and even a dangerous journey back into history."

Brian Minchin, former Doctor Who/Torchwood script editor is stepping into Wilson's shoes to become the series' fourth producer, following Susie Liggat ("Invasion of the Bane"), Matthew Bouch (all of series one, and now BBC Three's Being Human) and Nikki Wilson (series two/three, and Doctor Who's 2010 series).

This very site reported on Clayton Hickman writing for the SJA well over two years ago. He posted on the now defunct Outpost Gallifrey soon afterwards that the story was 'nonsense' - guess something changed between then and now!

I'm hearing whispers that this year's series [POTENTIAL SPOILERS!!] may feature appearences by the Weeping Angels, and one of the stories may serve as a sequel to the classic 1970's Doctor Who adventure "The Hand of Fear". Neither of these reports (sent in by two different readers) are confirmed at the mo, so take with a pinch of salt until evidence presents itself either way.

Doctor Who Magazine #419 is out now, priced £4.20.

Go, buy!

More Sarah Jane Confirmed!

Posted: 03 Mar 2010 11:35 PM PST

The Sarah Jane Adventures gangAfter months of rumours and hints from Russell T Davies - not to mention out and out declarations that it is definitely happening - the BBC have formally confirmed not one but two new series of The Sarah Jane Adventures!

The fourth series - commissioned by CBBC Controller Damian Kavanagh - is set to go into production shortly, with co-producer Phil Ford (also co-producer), Joseph Lidster, Rupert Laight, Gareth Roberts and (former Doctor Who Magazine editor) Clayton Hickman all contributing scripts to the Russell T Davies-created show.

Elisabeth Sladen will of course return to the title role, with Tommy Knight, Daniel Anthony and Anjli Mohindra rightfully returning as Sarah's adopted son Luke, and their friends Clyde and Rani.

24×30 minute episodes are planned in total, with the fifth series entering production in early 2011 for broadcast later that year. Damian Kavanagh says:

"We are thrilled to be making many more episodes of The Sarah Jane Adventures.

"It is been a huge ratings and critical success on CBBC and we hope our viewers are going to be hooked on Sarah Jane's action-packed adventures for some time to come."

Many had expected the series to end with the third series, so to see confirmation of two new series is great news for all fans of this hugely successful children's serial.

Series 4 AND 5 of The Sarah Jane Adventures confirmed!

Posted: 03 Mar 2010 10:35 PM PST

The BBC Press Office has today confirmed that The Sarah Jane Adventures will be returning to CBBC for a fourth series later this year! And that’s not all - a fifth series, to air next year, has been given the green light too! This is of course great news for fans of the Doctor Who spin off, because it means that we’ll [...]

Another Two!

Posted: 03 Mar 2010 10:35 PM PST

Greetings all! Came back from LA a few days ago, after a cracking Doctor Who convention at Gallifrey 2010! There were SJA guests a'plenty, and I even managed to hug Phil Ford, writer behind The Lost Boy eppy in series one! Hell yes. Even got to have a chat with Paul Tamms and Bob Baker, the co-creators behind the new K9 Series! And boy do we have a lot of gossip about what's coming up on the show before it airs on Disney XD next month, woo! I've also got to pen down a Sarah Jane-related product review. But whilst you're waiting for all that, perhaps this'll pique your interest in the meantime?

----------------------------------------------------
Sarah Jane returns to CBBC for
two further series of adventures

CBBC Controller Damian Kavanagh has commissioned two new series (24 x 30-minutes) of hugely successful Doctor Who spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures, which will see the intrepid investigative journalist and her gang of young sidekicks continue to enthral children for the foreseeable future.

Created by Russell T Davies, and featuring one of Doctor Who's most famous companions, Sarah Jane Smith, The Sarah Jane Adventures is made by BBC Cymru Wales and has been a huge hit on CBBC since its debut in 2007, with viewing figures continuing to grow year on year.

The fourth series, set to air this autumn, will again star Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane. Young actors Tommy Knight, Daniel Anthony and Anjli Mohindra return as popular regulars Luke, Clyde and Rani.

The new adventures will feature the usual mixture of thrills, scares and fun with enemies old and new, including the terrors of the Nightmare Man, the sinister Shansheeth, the series' first visit to an alien world, and even a dangerous journey back into history.

The series will go into production in Cardiff later this month with series three producer Nikki Wilson stepping up alongside Russell T Davies as executive producer and new producer Brian Minchin joining the team.

Damian Kavanagh says: "We are thrilled to be making many more episodes of The Sarah Jane Adventures.

"It is been a huge ratings and critical success on CBBC and we hope our viewers are going to be hooked on Sarah Jane's action-packed adventures for some time to come."

BBC Wales Head of English Language Programmes, Clare Hudson, says: "The idea for The Sarah Jane Adventures sprang from the success of Doctor Who and it has since rocketed in popularity in its own right, thanks to the vision, talent and hard work of the show's brilliant cast and crew."

The fifth series will go into production in 2011 for transmission later that year.

Writers on the fourth series include Phil Ford (also co-producer), Joseph Lidster, Rupert Laight, Gareth Roberts and Clayton Hickman.

The Sarah Jane Adventures is a BBC Cymru Wales/Children's BBC Production.

Many thanks to the BBC Press Office. New villains? Time travel? New worlds? Can anybody say SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!?! =D

Sarah Jane Adventures Series 4 (and 5!) commissioned

Posted: 03 Mar 2010 10:18 PM PST

The BBC Press Office have announced that the Doctor Who Children's Television spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures has been recommissioned for a further two series. Both series will consist of twelve, twenty-five minute episodes.

Says CBBC Controller Damian Kavanagh:
We are thrilled to be making many more episodes of The Sarah Jane Adventures. It is been a huge ratings and critical success on CBBC and we hope our viewers are going to be hooked on Sarah Jane's action-packed adventures for some time to come.
BBC Wales Head of English Language Programmes, Clare Hudson, added:
The idea for The Sarah Jane Adventures sprang from the success of Doctor Who and it has since rocketed in popularity in its own right, thanks to the vision, talent and hard work of the show's brilliant cast and crew.
The fourth series starts production at the end of March (believed to be the 29th), for transmission in Autumn. The new producer has been named as Brian Minchin (former script-editor for Doctor Who/Torchwood), who will work alongside co-producer Phil Ford, with Russell T Davies and Doctor Who producer Nikki Wilson as executive producers; writers include Ford, Joseph Lidster, Rupert Laight, Gareth Roberts and Clayton Hickman, and the series will be script-edited by Gary Russell.

The show will feature all three main stars Tommy Knight (Luke), Daniel Anthony (Clyde) and Anjli Mohindra (Rani), as well as the title-star Elisabeth Sladen as investigative journalist Sarah Jane Smith; however, no mention has currently been made of K9.
The new adventures will feature the usual mixture of thrills, scares and fun with enemies old and new, including the terrors of the Nightmare Man, the sinister Shansheeth, the series' first visit to an alien world, and even a dangerous journey back into history.

The fifth series is expected to go into production next year.

More James Corden

Posted: 03 Mar 2010 06:53 PM PST

James Corden appearing in Doctor WhoComedy actor and writer James Corden was on the set of Doctor Who for the first time yesterday as he took part in the filming of an as-yet untitled episode.

Speaking to Richard Bacon on BBC Five Live earlier this week, Corden revealed:

"Well, I'm about to start an episode of Doctor Who tomorrow, and I've also started writing something else for the BBC."

There's no word yet as to how significant the Gavin & Stacey stars part in this Eleventh Doctor adventure is, or if he shares scenes with Matt Smith or Karen Gillan.

Corden first came to prominence (after a shaky start in Hollyoaks) in Fat Friends in 2001 before becoming one of The History Boys on both stage, radio and screen; from here he then worked with Fat Friends co-star Ruth Jones to write the inexplicably popular Gavin & Stacey, which ended recently.

Doctor Who Launch Party 2010 (UK)

Posted: 01 Mar 2010 08:57 AM PST

In a tradition dating back to series one, a free-to-enter event will be taking place in London to celebrate the return of Doctor Who to television. This year, however, will see a change of venue for the party, for which registration will be required - full details below.

'Eleventh Hour' Launch Party

A venue in the City of London will be playing host to a major, free-to-enter launch party to celebrate the arrival of 11th Doctor Matt Smith on Saturday 3 April.

Those familiar with previous parties at The Printworks in London may be dismayed to learn that venue has not only changed hands, but changed its identity too. However, no fewer than three new, similarly equipped establishments in the City are in the running to stage this year's party, although final choice of venue will be decided by the number of people who would like to attend.

The party is open to anyone aged 18 years or over, and will run from 2:00pm-10:00pm. Early arrival is recommended to secure best viewing points for the largest screens. All major Doctor Who programming will be screened in high-definition, surround-sound, and a licensed bar and full food service will be available all day.

Entry is free, but YOU MUST HAVE A TICKET. Bear in mind also this will be Easter weekend, so check out any public transport issues before registering your request for tickets.

To request tickets, send an email to organiser Jeremy Bentham stating your name, your email address (for replies), the number of people in your party, and your likely arrival time.

N.B: All registration requests must be received by 10:00pm Sunday 14 March. If your application is successful, you will receive details of the confirmed venue, plus your individual or group tickets, during the week commencing 22 March.

MFX Warehouse ends Replica line

Posted: 01 Mar 2010 02:56 AM PST

The MFX Warehouse have announced that they have ceased their lines of replica Doctor Who props.

The Warehouse produces replicas designed by its award-winning parent company Millennium FX. With that company having worked on Doctor Who and its spin-offs since production resumed in 2004, the last five years have seen the Warehouse produce fully licensed authentic hand-made replicas of a number of their designs, including items such as Cyberman and Ood heads, Clockwork Man masks, and the sonic screwdriver.

However, the announcement has stated that this line has now ended, and that their remaining stock of sonic screwdrivers - on sale at a reduced price - will no longer be available to purchase from April.

IDW announce first US Doctor Who Annual

Posted: 28 Feb 2010 11:23 PM PST

IDW Publishing have announced a new Doctor Who Annual to be released in the United States in 2010. Revealed at the Gallifrey One convention at the weekend, editor Donald Tipton explained:
The U.K. annuals are always reprints, oversized stuff, where this will be something new and different that hasn't been done before. The annual is a Tardis-centric issue - it's not really a Doctor Who book, it's more of a Tardis book, so we've got some pretty cool ideas there."
The annual will be written/drawn by three established writers for IDW's Doctor Who range - Tony Lee, Al Davison and Matthew Dow Smith - plus Hollywood screenwriter Jonathan L Davis who has written the main story.

The annual also features a short story by Matthew Smith that leads into IDW's final arc of their ongoing Tenth Doctor range of comics (issues 13-16, entitled Final Sacrifice). The comic series itself continues from March with issue 9 starting the Don't Step on the Grass story by Tony Lee; the new story will also feature the Doctor's companion Martha Jones.

You can read more about IDW's Doctor Who range in a report by Comic Book Resources from the convention.

Yesterday the collection that the BBC had sent to Auction at Bonhams went under the Hammer.

The Torchwood SUV went for 18,000 pound Sterling and Jackson Lakes Costume Brought in 3,120 Pounds.

A full list of what each individual piece Brought can be Found at the end of this Piece though a Link to the Bonhams Website.

It should be also noted that the two Planet of the Dead red Busses were removed before the Auction began, which makes me wonder what the BBC has planed for those.
