Filming Roundup 5th March

Posted: 05 Mar 2010 09:08 AM PST

This week saw filming taking place for the seventh and last block of the new series, for episodes 7 and 11. The beginning of the week saw the crew out in a village near St. Athan, whilst the latter half has been spent back on the streets and parks of Cardiff.

Filming on the 1st saw the TARDIS parked up outside a house; scenes witnessed included a number of elderly people seen to carry items into the house, and the Doctor attempting to access it through a window. Amy was said to be held inside.

Filming over the course of these two days have involved the Doctor staying at a house as a lodger with characters played by guest stars James Corden and Daisy Haggard.

Thursday concentrated on scenes at their house (filmed on Westville Road, Cardiff), with scenes of running from the house, some football antics between Matt Smith and James Corden during the day, and in the evening with the Doctor examining 'junk' (believed to be components for the 'alternative' TARDIS console as designed from the Blue Peter competition).

Friday, on the other hand, involved the Doctor engaged in a game of football at Victoria Park in Cardiff; Paul Mount and Ryan Farrell report:
Paul: Matt Smith and James Corden, in football rig, are, with a full team, playing football. The Doctor's clearly very good at this and he scores a spectacular goal. The rest of the team go nuts. The 'crowd' (ie about six onlookers!) chant "Doc-tor! Doc-tor!" as he scores. the triumphant Doctor runs around, shouting, alternately "I love this game!" or "What a game!"

Ryan: The Doctor's team won! They all pick him up and he says "please, you're too kind. I feel like the emperor!". They've moved and now Matt has his tweed coat over his kit. Greenscreen being set up. Confidential are here too. Matt was having a right laugh! He went right up to the camera and said something like "Matt Smith. The Doctor. Defender". He seems to be getting on with James Corden off camera. By the way, Matt knows what he's doing because he originally aspired to be a professional footballer before he had an accident. He played for Leicester under 21s I think. I'd say this scene was written with Matt in mind.

Later, a scene was filmed of the Doctor exiting the TARDIS (believed to take place at the start of the adventure).

2|entertain's future secured

Posted: 05 Mar 2010 04:33 AM PST

BBC Worldwide have announced that they now fully own DVD distributor 2|entertain, the company closely associated with the release of Doctor Who DVDs over the last six years. The fate of the company has been uncertain since BBC Worldwide's partner Woolworth went into administration back in 2008.

John Smith, CEO, BBC Worldwide, said:
I am pleased that we have finally concluded these negotiations, and have secured the future of 2|entertain. This comes as good news for a variety of stakeholders. 2|entertain's retail partners know it is now backed by a stable owner. Consumers can continue to enjoy BBC content on DVD in their own homes. The independent production sector already works closely with 2|entertain. And licence fee payers will continue to benefit from 2|entertain's contribution to BBC Worldwide, which helped us return a total of £153m to the BBC in the last financial year.
Paul Dempsey, CEO of 2|entertain and Managing Director, BBC Worldwide Home Entertainment, added:
The 2|entertain business has not been distracted by the events of the past 18 months, continuing to deliver impressive results. Under full BBC Worldwide ownership, it now looks forward to a more settled period and playing an important role in BBC Worldwide's future plans.

Delia Derbyshire - Enduring Legend

Posted: 04 Mar 2010 11:30 PM PST

Delia DerbyshireA great piece on the Daily Record website this week paid tribute to the enduring legend of Delia Derbyshire, the first lady of electronic music and the brain behind the distinctive arrangement of the Doctor Who theme tune.

Although composed by Ron Grainer - a man who had a string of theme tune credits to his name such as Danger Man (used on the old Radio 1 Mark Radcliffe show), The Prisoner, Steptoe and Son, Tales of the Unexpected and Man in a Suitcase (used by Chris Evans on the 1990s Channel 4 series TFI Friday) - the Doctor Who theme tune owes its popularity and all round effect to the arrangement Derbyshire applied to the piece.

Famously, when Grainer heard her play it for the first time, he was stunned, and said "Did I write that?". Delia, modestly, replied, "Most of it, Ron."

Before her death in 2001, Derbyshire went on to work with David Vorhaus, Sir Paul McCartney and Sonic Boom and her admirers include Portishead and Orbital.

There is much more on this at the Daily Record blog, including how even now, Derbyshire's name remains out of the Doctor Who credits list.

Companion Chronicles Season Five

Posted: 04 Mar 2010 10:22 PM PST

Big Finish has revealed that Andrew Smith, the writer of the 1980 TV story Full Circle, is to pen a forthcoming release in the Companion Chronicles series.

The fifth season of the Chronicles begins in July, kicking off with The Guardian of the Solar System by Simon Guerrier, which stars Jean Marsh as Sara Kingdom. "The clue is in the title," says producer David Richardson. "Yes, the story brings back Mavic Chen, the spectacular villain from The Daleks' Masterplan, who once again is out to fulfil a grand scheme and will be putting the Doctor, Sara and Steven in dire peril.

"This story actually brings our first Sara Kingdom trilogy to an end," he divulges. "And it's a very emotional finale – be warned!"

Echoes of Grey follows in August, with Wendy Padbury reprising the role of Zoe Heriot. The script is written by John Dorney, and features the 1969 team of the Second Doctor, Zoe and Jamie.

September sees the release of Find and Replace by Paul Magrs, in which Katy Manning returns as Jo Grant. "And Katy's not just playing Jo," Richardson reveals. "She's also playing the outrageous time traveller Iris Wildthyme too! And, just to top it all, we've got Alex Lowe back as Huxley, the mysterious narrator from Verbatim Six – a character who made a huge impression in last season's Ringpullworld."

October's release, The Invasion of E-Space, is penned by the aforementioned Andrew Smith and performed by Lalla Ward. "I was at a convention in Glasgow last year, and Andrew and I got chatting," says Richardson. "He was very keen to write a Companion Chronicle, and I thought it would be fun to set it during the E-Space Trilogy, and feature the Fourth Doctor, Romana and Adric."

Popular senior citizen companion Evelyn Smythe returns for A Town Called Fortune in November, which is written by Paul Sutton. "We've had a huge number of requests for the return of Evelyn," says the producer, "and I can promise you'll hear much more of her in 2011. This story is an historical adventure, which takes Evelyn and the Sixth Doctor into the Wild West during the Gold Rush era."

Has the Sonic Screwed New Who?

Posted: 04 Mar 2010 10:02 PM PST

It seems funny that five years after the show's sweet return in 2005 that the sonic screwdriver, a once proud iconic bastion of Doctor Who's nostalgic gadgets, would have become such an unpopular and contentious article among the older fan groups.

The Tenth Doctor, sonic screwdriver in use! After 25 years of semi-retirement, the sonic's return has been criticised by older fans for the sheer weight of its use in the New Series. They object to the Doctor just being able to flick a sonic switch to resolve a technical issue rather than have him resolve a problem through ingenuity (resorting to the kettle, fishing rod and the ever popular ball of string in most cases). It's seen as a "lazy" device operated by "lazy writers"; a cheap trick used to avoid difficult science issues that clearly the writer has no understanding of – its even been suggested in some fan circles as an indicator of how far Doctor Who has lost its way by avoiding technical resolutions in favour of a sonic "magic wand".

"Classic" Doctor Who ran one story weekly at around 25 minutes per episode. With such large gaps between episodes – and few ways to repeat a viewing between parts - the show couldn't be too complex. Budget also meant it had to be careful how many scenes and events too place. So how do you reconcile these issues? You pad the story. Funnily, "padding" has a stigma of "lazy" about it, yet padding out stories with scenes or dialogue that aren't necessarily plot vital can be bot cost-effective and useful for exposition and recaps.

So old Who wasn't about getting the Doctor out of the trap quickly, it's about keeping him in the trap for a while, saving money and filling time. His sonic screwdriver made it too hard to keep him in one trap for long. It had to go.

Now look at "New Who". Stories are condensed into one episode, reruns available the same week. So padding becomes less of an issue, in fact, these days TV demands the contrary - shows must brim with pace and drama. If a show doesn't meet those demands, a costly show like Who won't last long.

So in comes the sonic screwdriver again, a multi-purpose tool that opens the "magic doors" (those points in a narrative that are really no more than a gateway between two scenes, an obstacle of some sort, say, a door) and allows the story to progress quickly - meaning more time for plot and dramatic content.

Many fans sneer at the new audiences – and the casual watchers, but its their investment that keeps Doctor Who profit worthy and viable. Just as Doctor Who of 1963 wouldn't have worked in 1979, Doctor Who of 1979 doesn't work in 2010. And to balance the demands of today's audience, the sonic screwdriver is the Doctor's best tool in keeping the BBC's axe, firmly locked away.

iPhone Controlled Dalek

Those crazy hardcore iPhone fans have done it again - not content with playing around with an out of date phone, they've employed the accelerometer (motion sensitive controller) to remotely manoeuvre a remote control Dalek toy.

It looks a bit unwieldy to say the least, but with some refining and the use of the small gizmo demonstrated within the clip, it's likely that moving any RC device with an iPhone (or a similarly equipped device from HTC, perhaps running Windows Mobile or Android) should be possible…
