Doctor Who is Under Your Bed

Posted: 22 Mar 2010 09:30 AM PDT

A superb interview with Steven Moffat appeared in The Guardian today, in which the Executive Producer and chief writer of Doctor Who discussed a variety of things, from the horror of a world without the BBC to what he would do to if someone demanded he created a monster to sell toys.

Steven Moffat with his first HUGO. That is why he is in charge of Doctor Who.Many Doctor Who fans were delighted with the recruitment of Moffat as the replacement for Russell T Davies because of the Blink writer's fundamental relationship with Doctor Who. This is exemplified in the interview, in which he describes his version of the show as having a "storybook quality."

"For me, Doctor Who literally is a fairy tale. It's not really science fiction. It's not set in space, it's set under your bed. It's at its best when it's related to you, no matter what planet it's set on."

It's always good to see and hear interviews with Moffat - he's often grumpy and a bit sarcastic, but you can genuinely see his affection for Doctor Who.

In case you have forgotten, Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor joins Karen Gillan's Amy Pond in The Eleventh Hour on Saturday, 3rd April…

Uncle Sam-ic Screwdriver?

Posted: 22 Mar 2010 09:01 AM PDT

Paul McGann as the Eighth DoctorHiding away in some delightful banter between Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith and lovely Karen Gillan in the Mirror over the weekend was the return of the horrific
rumour of a US version of Doctor Who.

I cannot state clearly enough how absolutely wrong this would be. America had its chance with Doctor Who in 1996 - there is simply no way they could possibly do the series justice.

Apparently, a source told the Sunday Mirror:

"The countdown is on for an American Time Lord to take over the Tardis. Doctor Who is as British as tea and toast or fish and chips. So there will be a few ruffled feathers at the thought of such a British institution being given a Hollywood makeover.

"This is going to be an all-American Doctor. Think Uncle Sam with a Sonic Screwdriver."

I'd rather not, frankly. Americanizing Torchwood is one thing - the format lends itself to a band of alien hunters from anywhere in the world.

While Doctor Who can take us anywhere in the world, an American version of the series can only succeed in making the same mistakes of the past, whether they be the "missing the point" failures of the TV Movie (which we at Kasterborous are fans of for two reasons - Paul McGann, above, and Daphne Ashbrook) or those since replicated on shows like Life on Mars.

Let's keep Doctor Who British, people.

Paradise 5 from Big Finish

Posted: 22 Mar 2010 12:05 AM PDT

Doctor Who Lost Stories Paradise 5 from Big FinishStarring Colin Baker as the Doctor and Nicola Bryant as Peri, with Alex Macqueen and James D'Arcy, Paradise 5 is the latest in the series of Doctor Who Lost Stories from Big Finish.

A selection of some of the scripts that might have made it to television for the original Season 23 (which was later replaced with The Trial of a Time Lord in 1986), The Lost Stories has already included stories from Christopher H Bidmead, Philip Martin and Graham Williams.

The Doctor and Peri visit the planet Targos Delta to check in on old friend Professor Albrecht Thompson, only to discover that he has vanished. He was last sighted taking a shuttle to the holiday resort of Paradise 5, then never seen again.

The Doctor's curiosity is piqued. They must investigate, but they must do so stealthily… Peri will go undercover on Paradise 5, while the Doctor hides in the shadows. Because paradise holds a terrible secret beneath the white marble and golden trimmings. The mute Cherubs have a story to tell. And the Elohim are coming.

Additional cast members are:

Alex Macqueen as Gabriel, James D'Arcy as Michael, Helen Goldwyn as Stella/Bella, Andree Bernard as Lorelei, Teddy Kempner as Mr Gelter/Mr Bliss/Elohim Voice, Claire Wyatt as Ms Aht and Richard Earl as Mr Tapp/Mr Winterbourne.

Directed by Barnaby Edwards and written by PJ Hammond & Andy Lane, Paradise 5 is available from Big Finish!
