Posted: 27 Mar 2010 10:52 AM PDT The return of Doctor Who not only heralds a new start for the series, it heralds a new start for Harris Tweed, the once-fashionable fabric whose fortune has seen a downturn in recent years. Following the unveiling of the new Doctor's 'Geography Master' attire, it seems that fans keen on replicating his look were straight on the phone to the Harris Tweed Authority to see if they could get a replica. Lorna Macaulay of the HTA recalls:
Although supplied by Angels theatrical costumiers, the type of tweed sported by Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith has been identified as Mackenzie "two by two" dogtooth, likely to hail from the 1960s. Ray Holman is the costume designer on the new Doctor Who - he reveals that there are multiple jackets, the one that has caused all the fuss is for best, while substitutes are worn for stunt work and pyrotechnics. The choice of tweed was apparently a simple one:
Originating in the Scottish Hebrides, Harris Tweed is a heavy woollen material that is spun, dyed, woven and finished. It seems likely authentic replicas will be produced by the Carloway Mill on Lewis. (With thanks to Ian) |

Posted: 27 Mar 2010 01:50 AM PDT New Doctor Who Matt Smith appeared on Friday Night with Jonathan Ross this week - accompanied by a long clip from Vampires in Venice, episode 6 of the new series. Pitching the Doctor into a Hammer horror-esque cellar and a groupe of no-you-see-em-now-you-don't traditional vampires, all dressed in white, the clip seems to hint at a decidedly gothic tone for the episode - something many fans have hoped is replicated across the whole run. As the main star on the show (despite being alongside Oscar winner Emma Thompson) Smith was brought on last - so if you fancy catching up with the interview (in which the new star of Doctor Who reveals he wants to do "at least" another year and keep hold of the part as long as possible) you'll need to cycle through about 40 minutes of the show, available now on BBC iPlayer. Alternatively, catch just the marvellous clip - in which the Doctor wields a very out of date library card - at www.doctorwhoHD.com! |

Posted: 24 Mar 2010 11:57 AM PDT The Daily Mail has taken exception to the length of Amy Pond's skirt in the upcoming series of Doctor Who. Writing in the Femail section, columnist Allison Pearson displays a woeful ignorance of the series when she asks "since when was Doctor Who's assistant supposed to be sexy?" and makes a plea to keep Doctor Who as family TV. As any Doctor Who fan could tell her, the Doctor has a long tradition of travelling with sexy companions in short skirts which dates right back to the sixties. What's next she asks, "Cybermen become Cyberchicks with metal boobs?" Perhaps she should view Torchwood's Cyberwoman. |
