Posted: 28 Mar 2010 08:01 AM PDT The legendary American comic book artist and editor, Dick Giordano, died yesterday. I briefly spoke to him about his work on the 1966 Dell adaptation of Dr. Who and the Daleks last year, but never really found a place for his courteous replies to my questions in Vworp Vworp!. So, by way of tribute, please click on the thumbnail below for a page that never made it into the magazine…
Posted: 28 Mar 2010 08:00 AM PDT Fact meeting fiction - or real life imitating art? That's the question following the unveiling of the United Kingdom Space Agency's new logo, which seems somehow familiar. Could it have been seen already, perhaps in Doctor Who? Revealed this week, the emblem of the (seemingly pointless) UKSA was presented to the press and public by Science Minister Lord Drayson and Business Secretary Lord Mandelson. Intended to take charge of all UK space activities, the idea is that it will unify the myriad of loose partnerships between Government departments and research councils that currently (mis)handles British space policy. Given that all orders come from Brussels as of January 1st, however, it seems pretty late in the day for the creation of such a body. The main interest for Doctor Who fans however is the fact that the new agency's logo bears a striking resemblance to the logo of the fictional British Rocket Group, as you can see both here and on the Guinevere One project website (launched in advance of The Christmas Invasion back in 2005.) Although mentioned twice in the annals of Doctor Who (Remembrance of the Daleks in 1988 and The Christmas Invasion in 2005) the British Rocket Group is of course a reference to the British Experimental Rocket Group of the Quatermass series, created by Nigel Kneale; a reference to his avuncular hero, Professor Bernard Quatermass, is included in Remembrance of the Daleks.
Doctor Who and the Periodic Table Posted: 28 Mar 2010 07:20 AM PDT A purchase the Periodic Table of Sci-Fi from TopatoCo will reward any sci-fi fan - especially Doctor Who fans - with a superb poster reference to the best in Film and TV sci-fi. Placing Dr(Who) alongside Spc(1999), Lgn(Logan's Run), Du(ne) and DS9 the chart is split up into groups such as Roddenlucathine, Metallcrichtonide, Cameronkubriclarkine and even Inert. Movies such as Chln(of Men) and TW(elve Monkeys) also appear in what is a pretty cool addition to any bedroom wall. There might be no room for Torchwood on this periodic table, but then there doesn't seem to be an awful lot of space for it anywhere at the moment… (Via Technabob)
Details for episode two of Doctor Who Confidential Posted: 28 Mar 2010 06:58 AM PDT The title and synopsis for Episode Two of the forthcoming series of Doctor Who Confidential have been revealed. All about the Girl, narrated by Alex Price, is currently set to broadcast on BBC3 at 7:00PM on Saturday 10th April. As its name suggests, the instalment will focus on the new companion, Amy Pond. The synopsis reads: Behind-the-scenes with new companion Amy Pond [...]
Posted: 28 Mar 2010 06:57 AM PDT Torchwood star John Barrowman might be short of a sci-fi action show at the moment, but he's certainly not out of work. While appearing in Desperate Housewives in the USA, Barrowman has also revealed that he is in talks to appear in Glee.
Meanwhile, if you've been wondering how Barrowman manages to retain his dashing good looks, there's more to it than the self confessed botox around the eyes - John Barrowman is a heavy user of hair dye!
Fans of John Barrowman "the presenter" will be glad to know that the star is set to return to Saturday nights on BBC One later this year with a second series of Tonight's the Night, in which John makes dreams come true for lucky viewers.
The new format for the show will see it include the Saturday National Lottery Lotto, Dream Number and Thunderball draws/ Finally, panto fans will be happy to know that John Barrowman is already booked up for the 2010 season - he's set to star with The Krankies in Aladdin at Glasgow's SECC Clyde Auditorium from Saturday 11th December 2010 to Sunday 9th January 2011.

Posted: 28 Mar 2010 05:12 AM PDT Lucky Doctor Who fans in the Chicago area are set for a treat - the C2E2 event on the weekend of April 16th - 18th will get the chance to catch The Eleventh Hour, one day early! Attendees of the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo (hence C2E2) will be given a preview screening on Friday, 16th April between 8pm and 9.45pm, pretty much ensuring anyone at the event doesn't miss anything on the following evening. One reason for this could be to placate the Doctor Who fans expected to turn out on Saturday night for An Evening with Neil Gaiman - the writer has indicated that he is likely to be scripting an episode of the 2011 series. While Doctor Who returns to British television on April 3rd, US fans must wait a further two weeks for their first proper glimpse of the Eleventh Doctor, played by Matt Smith. Posted: 27 Mar 2010 08:34 PM PDT Gorgeous Doctor Who co-star Karen Gillan appears in the Sunday Times this weekend in their regular "Life in the Day" feature - an example of how the mundane clashes with the seemingly glamourous world of showbiz. The Amy Pond actress is certainly aware of the importance of her new starring role to legions of Doctor Who fans around the world, and is taking the task of interpreting her character as seriously as you would expect:
She might be about to become the most recognisable redhead on TV, but apparently Karen Gillan isn't that easy to spot when she goes out and about with her co-star, Matt Smith… Dinner is a sandwich and a packet of crisps from Tesco. Matt and I do this nearly every day. He always has egg and cress and I go for deep-filled ham, cheese and pickle. He gets recognised everywhere he goes, but I'm pretty anonymous at the moment. People have started sending me pictures of myself, though. It's quite weird when you open a letter and see your face. Read the full interview at www.timesonline.co.uk - while it's still free…
