More images from The Eleventh Hour

Posted: 29 Mar 2010 10:01 AM PDT

The BBC have today released another batch of episode stills (and they’ve also thrown in a couple of filming shots for good measure!), which are taken from episode one of the forthcoming series, The Eleventh Hour. If you didn’t know already, the episode airs this Saturday on BBC One! Check out the images below:

New Doctor Who Radio Times Cover!

Posted: 29 Mar 2010 10:01 AM PDT

Doctor Who Radio Times cover starring Matt Smith and Karen GillanDoctor Who fans should grab the new issue of Radio Times, out Tuesday, 30th April, which includes an exclusive glimpse inside the new TARDIS in a special pull-out gatefold cover!

Along with a full episode guide courtesy of Steven Moffat, (in which Simon Nye's episode 7 is revealed to be called Amy's Choice) the listings magazine for the week covering April 3rd-April 9th also features interviews with new Doctor Who stars Matt Smith and Karen Gillan…

It looks a pretty insightful chat, in fact, in which we see that Matt Smith has his own way of accessing his enigmatic character.

"I was thinking, 'Who in the world has a brain and a silliness which is close to the Doctor?' and then I saw that photograph of Albert Einstein poking his tongue out and it just clicked.

"I think that, more than anything, was my way in to the part."

Meanwhile, Karen Gillan declares that working on the show is unlike anything else.

"Once you get sucked into that world, it has its own logic and laws, which is why I think people are so passionate about it."

Get the new Radio Times to see the full gatefold cover image that finally reveals the new TARDIS interior!

Radio Times Cover

Posted: 29 Mar 2010 10:01 AM PDT

Radio TimesThe new issue of the Radio Times is released in the UK today, and gives an exclusive glimpse into the new TARDIS with a special pull-out gatefold cover.

The magazine talks to new Doctor Matt Smith. Smith is a graduate of the University of East Anglia, where he studied drama and creative writing, and has his own way of accessing the enigmatic Doctor.

I was thinking, 'Who in the world has a brain and a silliness which is close to the Doctor?' and then I saw that photograph of Albert Einstein poking his tongue out and it just clicked. I found this book of quotes by Einstein – which I recommend as a life choice, he was such an insightful man – and I started writing short stories about Einstein and the Doctor, where the Doctor was getting irritated with the great man's buffoonery. He'd be saying, 'Come on, Albert, keep up!' and I think that, more than anything, was my way in to the part.

Also Karen Gillan is the girl who grabbed the role every actress would die for: the companion to the eleventh Doctor. Fans camped outside the Doctor Who set are a reminder of the show's unique place in British culture.
I was never really into science fiction when I was growing up, though my mum was a big Doctor Who fan. Now I've turned into a real sci-fi geek. Once you get sucked into that world, it has its own logic and laws, which is why I think people are so passionate about it.

No Emulation, Says Smith

Posted: 29 Mar 2010 07:43 AM PDT

Matt Smith is Doctor WhoNew Doctor Who Matt Smith has explained that it is pointless to try and emulate any of his predecessors.

Speaking to AOL TV, the actor once again admitted to being a fan of Patrick Troughton, while also revealing that he is in fact in awe of each previous actor.

"In terms of emulating any of the past Doctors, I don't think that's something you can try to do or think about.

"I know it's a cliché, but I can't believe this is work. It never gets dull because each month there are new characters and actors coming in."

Matt Smith's time is almost upon us - with The Eleventh Hour on premiering this Saturday 3rd April at 6.20pm, a new issue of Doctor Who Magazine due later this week and a Radio Times cover (more news on that at 12.01am), this long-awaited new era of Doctor Who is ready to go!

Dedicated Doctor

Posted: 29 Mar 2010 04:21 AM PDT

New Doctor Who star Matt Smith has revealed how far his dedication to researching the role of the Time Lord has taken him - he's even written his own stories!

While Doctor Who stars writing their own adventures is nothing new (see Tom Baker and Ian Marter's Doctor Who Meets Scratchman) it is great to see how the new star of the series has embraced the iconic role.

"I wanted to feel like Doctor Who, understand where he'd come from, so I wrote stories of the Doctor and Einstein in Egypt, which focused on their roles in the creation of the Pyramids."

"I had six months prep before we began filming so it gave me time to write quite a few stories."

I don't imagine we'll ever see these tales reach the screen - but I wonder how much they would fetch on eBay…?

Episode Seven Title

Posted: 29 Mar 2010 02:48 AM PDT

The title of Episode Seven of the new series has been revealed as Amy's Choice.

The title is revealed in next weeks edition of Radio Times, which is released tomorrow. The story is written by Simon Nye and directed by Catherine Morshead.

The magazine confirms the titles of the first seven episodes of the series, the first six of which were previously known. There is some confusion over the title of Episode Six. Although DWM and Matt Smith have referred to it as Vampires in Venice, the scripts author, Toby Whithouse, and the BBC preview discs have confirmed the title is Vampires of Venice.

The cover will be available on the Doctor Who News Page from 12.01am BST tomorrow.

Sometimes Scary

Posted: 28 Mar 2010 11:20 PM PDT

Steven MoffatAs part of a series of articles to herald the new series of Doctor Who, sfx.co.uk have published the first of a two-part interview with The Grand Moff himself.

Executive Producer Steven Moffat discusses his interpretation of Doctor Who, explains the meaning of "dark fairytale" and the changes to the TARDIS police box exterior. Of key interest to us right now is this, Moffat's own thoughts on being described as "the horror writer" and just how true this is…

"I'm noted as ["the horror writer"], and like most things that people notice it's not particularly true. I didn't write 'Midnight' or 'The Satan Pit'. I did write 'The Girl In The Fireplace', which isn't scary at all. Is this series scarier? Sometimes, when it's appropriate to be scary.

"If it was scary every episode that in itself would be boring. In a way it's like humour; one of the tricks of humour is that if you're funny all the time then you stop being funny at all."

Given that Moffat certainly knows how to scare the audience and that he has recruited some top comedy writers in Simon Nye and Richard Curtis (not to mention Mark Gatiss) I think it could be fair to say that this series of Doctor Who is going to feature both a lot of humour and a good few scares.

“He thinks he’s cool”

Posted: 28 Mar 2010 10:20 PM PDT

Matt Smith is the Eleventh Doctor
The SFX website has a raft of Doctor Who new series goodies this week, kicking off with a discussion between Executive Producer Piers Wenger and costume designer Ray Holman on the look of the Eleventh Doctor.

We've already heard from Doctor Who Magazine how Matt Smith's Doctor refused to take shape until the actor was able to have his input into the various fittings for the Time Lord's regular attire - and it seems that the scripts have been able to incorporate references to the slightly eccentric look of the Eleventh Doctor.

"I think David Tennant's Doctor was quite cool, in his Converse and his Jarvis Cocker suit. The thing about Matt is that his Doctor thinks he's really cool, but everyone else spends the whole series going, 'What are you wearing?!'

"We didn't set off with that as an intention, but it's something that evolved, and that got written into the scripts. I think he's definitely a Doctor who thinks he's cool but nobody else does."

The full discussion at www.sfx.co.uk also features more on the custome, boots, headware, how the look migh be developed on later seasons and even a bit about Amy Pond:

"She's very sexy, but she's not overplayed sexy. She's a bit of a feisty, independent girl, so nothing is clearly from Top Shop or from the high street."
