Posted: 30 Mar 2010 09:00 AM PDT In the new Radio Times, Eleventh Doctor Who Matt Smith reveals that he wouldn't mind a crack at Hollywood… While his predecessor David Tennant continues to be linked to major movies (while he's not dropping out of them) and Ninth Doctor Christopher Eccleston has a burgeoning Hollywood resume (most recently being one of the few good things in GI Joe), it would seem sensible for the man who is likely to be one of the most famous faces in Britain this time next week to consider having a go at life in California.
However Smith adds that for now he is happy in the TARDIS:
Bearing in mind it drags him through tiem and space, it's just as well. You'd hate to be in an unsafe timeship.
Steven Moffat on screwdrivers, Daleks and Russell Posted: 30 Mar 2010 08:45 AM PDT Steven Moffat was interviewed on Front Row on BBC Radio 4 this evening, during which he revealed that he didn’t have to research any aspects of the series before writing as he grew up with a firm understanding of its mythology. “I didn’t really have to look up much, because I honestly do know the history of Doctor Who very well,” he laughed. The Doctor Drops Into Inverness Posted: 30 Mar 2010 08:10 AM PDT The Doctor Drops Into Inverness News Dated: 30/3/2010 Matt Smith (The Doctor) & Karen Gillan (Amy Pond) have stopped off at Inverness on their Doctor Who Tour. The BBC's View from the South Bank Blog, has a video report as well as a blog entry from the tour location: (Link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereporters/paulinemclean/2010/03/doctor_who_was_that.html) Barely had actor Matt Smith - aka the 11th doctor - and the rest of his entourage arrived in Inverness for a soggy photocall on a beach near Loch Ness, and a screening and Q&A at Eden Court Theatre with local schoolkids, than they were back on the bus and headed for a similar session in Sunderland. Never would a TARDIS have been more handy. (although one installed with a DVD player for the box set of True Blood, which Mr Smith is working his way through as he travels.) It is of course a promotional exercise for the new series, which begins on Saturday, but for the 180 children who got tickets for the screening (and many more who waited outside for autographs) there was another benefit. Most of the children at the event attend regular drama sessions through Eden Court. It was there that Karen Gillan - who plays Amy Pond, the doctor's flame-haired assistant got her first taste for drama. The same's true for her little cousin Caitlin Blackwood - who appears in episode one as Amy as a child. Yet, these drama classes - which reach thousands of children in the Highlands - may be under threat. Highland Council is currently reviewing a number of schemes as part of ongoing cost cutting - the drama courses among them. Let's hope they think twice about that particular cut. Not just for the handful of children who go onto professional careers - brandishing their own accents on mainstream television - but for the thousands more who simply learn a bit of extra confidence for whatever career path they choose. Posted: 30 Mar 2010 08:00 AM PDT A video interview with new Doctor Who Matt Smith accompanies a WalesOnline feature on the recent press launch, in which the actor gives some more insight into how he approached the role. We've all heard about the Einstein references by now - but there is much more to Smith's interpretation it seems. One thing is for sure, there can be no doubt that he understands the importance and possibilities inherent in the part. Of the Doctor, Matt Smith says:
As if you didn't know by now, The Eleventh Hour airs this Saturday, 3rd April on BBC One at 6.20pm.

Posted: 30 Mar 2010 06:22 AM PDT The Doctor Who Tour of Britain is underway, with the BBC Outreach bus taking the stars of the new series around the UK to meet young fans and screen previews of The Eleventh Hour. Press coverage has already begun, and after visiting Belfast yesterday the duo were in Gillan's home town of Inverness today. A BBC blog from Scotland arts correspondent Pauline McLean provides additional information, such as explaining that the location chosen in Inverness - Eden Court Theatre - was graced by the screening and Q&A with local schoolkids in order to highlight impending cuts from the Highland Council. While many of the attending children currently enjoy drama lessons courtesy of the theatre, these drama courses face cuts. Let's hope that the council recognise the importance of local arts beyond the slim chance of fame and fortune that many long for. Local arts and entertainment can stimulate regional economies and provide a useful community focus. Later this week, the BBC Bus visits Sunderland, Salford and Northampton - the latter the home town of Matt Smith. Meanwhile, you can also catch brief video interviews with Matt Smith and Karen Gillan (the latter discussing her accent) at STV.com.

Posted: 30 Mar 2010 04:32 AM PDT Steven Moffat has previewed every episode of Series 5 in the new Radio Times and he reveals some tantalising glimpses into the series ahead. Here's some of the most interesting bits and our thoughts. Obviously spoilers follow! Episode 1. The Eleventh Hour
That will be because the Doctor turns up a 'bit' later than he promised the young Amy then! Episode 2. The Beast Below
Who could this mysterious masked figure be? And how does he know the Doctor? Episode 3. Victory of the Daleks
We know Winston Churchill is using the Daleks in the war effort, but obviously this doesn't go to plan. Episodes 4 & 5. The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone
There is just one Weeping Angel? Moffat has said they are different this time. Episode 6. Vampires in Venice
Perhaps this 'something' lurking in the canal is controlling the vampires? Episode 7. Amy's Choice
So the rumour that Amy was pregnant is true! Episodes 8 and 9
This is the Silurian two-parter and they are of course the ones that get disturbed. Episode 10
Cornfields – scary! The Doctor lite episode? Episode 11
This is the one with James Corden and the Doctor playing footy. Could be a bit of a comedy episode, and Amy lite. Episodes 12 and 13
Sounds like a very exciting finale. The Cybermen must be in this one… You can read the full preview in the new Radio Times out now.

Posted: 30 Mar 2010 04:13 AM PDT Steven Moffat has explained to SFX his reasoning behind bringing back the Daleks in the fifth series. When asked if he felt compelled to bring the pepper-pots back, Moffat explained, "You don't have to bring them back. There's absolutely no law that says you have to bring back the Daleks. But occasionally, back in the day, when I still looked at the fan stuff on the internet, there'd be people saying, 'Oh, the Daleks are back every year!' But for kids that's ages to wait for a Dalek story. You have to think of the Daleks as almost a regular character." He continued, "They're one of the regulars. But they're brilliant. They're still the number one Doctor Who monster. They were invented in 1963 and they're still number one. That says there's something very magical about them. We haven't managed to top them. So of course you're going to bring them back. You can pretend you're being a grown-up and say, 'Oh, it's the Daleks again!', but secretly your little heart is beating, because it's the Daleks." He also teases that the other returning monsters, the Weeping Angels, may be a little different than last time, "They have more powers than you thought. And you are not safe just because you can keep your eyes open!"

Posted: 29 Mar 2010 10:42 PM PDT SFX's online interview with new Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat continues today, with Daleks, Weeping Angels and returning friends and foes the topic of the day. It is a fascinating read, complete with what could be construed as a dig (and not the first) at the previous regime's habit of bringing back the same characters over and over again. The interview also provides a clear feeling Moffat's Doctor Who being a "new start" in terms of classic monsters and characters being brought back.
