David Myerscough-Jones 1934-2010

Posted: 28 Apr 2010 09:23 AM PDT

Set designer David Myerscough-Jones has died at the age of 75.

David Myerscough-Jones was Designer for three stories in the classic series. He first worked on the 1968 second Doctor story The Web of Fear. Set in a London tube station, the BBC refused to pay the high fee demanded to film in the actual location so Myerscough-Jones was tasked with replicating the London Underground system in a television studio. He achieved this so admirably, with a replica so lifelike, that the BBC recieved a letter of complaint from London Underground alleging that filming had taken place on their property without permission.

In 1970 he returned to the series working on the third Doctor story The Ambassadors of Death and two years later he worked on Day of the Daleks.

Outside of Doctor Who Myerscough-Jones has a long successful career. His most notable achievement was designing the sets for a television version of Britten's opera Peter Grimes.

He died of cancer on April 21, 2010, and is survived by his wife, Pelo, to whom he was married in 1963, and their four children.

Matt Smith to play Christopher Isherwood

Posted: 28 Apr 2010 06:18 AM PDT

Matt Smith is to play the novelist Christopher Isherwood in a new drama for BBC Two.

Titled Christopher and his Kind, the drama is based on the memoir of the same name, written by Isherwood in 1976. It covers the ten years in the writer's life-from 1929 to 1939, when he left England for Berlin, the capital of the young Weimar Republic, drawn by its reputation for sexual freedom. It talks about the gay Berlin of the 1930s and Isherwood's struggles to save his companion, a German man named Heinz, from the Nazis. Isherwood's experiences in the city later inspired him to write his 1939 novella Goodbye to Berlin on which the Broadway musical Cabaret was based.

The drama will also star Lindsay Duncan, who played Adelaide Brooke in The Waters of Mars, as Isherwood's mother. It will be directed by Geoffrey Sax who directed the 1996 TV Movie of Doctor Who.

The drama is written by acclaimed playwright Kevin Elyot (My Night With Reg) and produced by Celia Duval for Mammoth Screen.

Filming on Christopher and his Kind starts in May. The 90-minute drama is likely to screen on BBC Two in the autumn.

Amy SuperPond?

Posted: 28 Apr 2010 06:00 AM PDT

There is a good interview on io9.com with Amy Pond actress Karen Gillan, in which the Doctor Who star chats about skirt length, Amy's relationship with the Doctor (Matt Smith) and a bit more.

Of particular interest is the line of question concerning the development of previous primary companions since 2005.

Karen Gillan stars in Doctor WhoFor those of you who might have forgotten, since meeting the Doctor, Rose Tyler swallowed the power of the time vortex to defeat Daleks, Martha Jones spent a year wandering the Earth, Donna's wiped memory could cause shockwaves as a way of protecting her from remembering her meta-crisis and of course Captain Jack Harkness became immortal.

When asked if there was any chance of this happening to her character, Gillan replied:

Ooh, I don't know. I think that she definitely changes a lot, a lot, a lot, over the course of this series. I don't know. It would be quite fun, wouldn't it?

But I mean, I like her. I like the relationship between the Doctor and Amy, and it always scares to think that it might finish. And that's what always seems to happen when they become superheroes. Suddenly their memory gets wiped or something.

Dalek Spoilers

Posted: 28 Apr 2010 04:49 AM PDT

A recent interview with Doctor Who voice actor Nick Briggs by Digital Spy has revealed something interesting about the new Daleks…

This is a bit of a spoiler that relates to episodes later in the current run of Doctor Who. As such we don't want to upset anyone, so the following is for spoilerphiles only!
Doctor Who voice actor Nicholas Briggs

When asked by Digital Spy reporter Matt Reynolds about the return of the Daleks later in the series, Briggs was naturally evasive, before suggesting that if he had contributed to another Dalek story, "then it's quite incredible…"

"…the energy of Steven Moffat's writing is amazing. There are masses of really cool, exciting information that fly at you, and then suddenly, it's like someone has diverted light with a mirror and it moves in the opposite direction. Imagine a Russell T Davies-style, action-packed adventure but written by Steven Moffat. You know what I mean? So it's not only dramatically frenetic, but it's intellectually frenetic, and idea frenetic. It's just absolutely buzzing. It was a fantastic read – if indeed I have read such a script!"

Elsewhere in the interview, Briggs answers questions about the upcoming Doctor Who: The Adventure Games (in which he voices Daleks opposite Matt Smith as the Doctor), Cybermen and how the new Daleks voices are different to the "originals".

Incidentally, we interviewed Nick not so long ago – it's a fascinating read!

Hamlet on PBS

Posted: 28 Apr 2010 02:57 AM PDT

David Tennant's acclaimed performance as Hamlet Prince of Denmark comes to PBS Wednesday evening as part of the Great Performances series. Immediately following the broadcast, the film will be available online in its entirety on the Great Performances Web site.

Hamlet aired in the UK on Boxing Day 2009 to an audience of more than 900,000. In an article in The Observer, Britain's Prime Minister Gordon Brown wrote: "Like many people, I had my love of Shakespeare reawakened by David Tennant's TV portrayal of Hamlet over Christmas."

Tennant made his debut in October as the host of MASTERPIECE CONTEMPORARY on PBS. His many other credits include his recent portrayal of Barty Crouch Junior in the big-screen blockbuster Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Tennant has also received numerous awards from the theatre community for his lead roles in several Shakespearean productions and other classic plays.

Veteran stage and screen actor Sir Patrick Stewart reprises his 2009 Laurence Olivier Award-winning role of Claudius in the screen version, which is directed by Gregory Doran, who also returns to reprise his stage direction of the production. Co-produced by Illuminations Television and the RSC for the BBC, in association with Thirteen for WNET.ORG and NHK, the adaptation recreates the tone and atmosphere of the stage production in a film-style interpretation shot in HD on location at St. Joseph's College in Mill Hill, London. The production is produced for television by John Wyver and Sebastian Gran.

St John, Be Cool

Posted: 27 Apr 2010 05:52 PM PDT

It has been several months since the new look TARDIS exterior was first seen on location as Matt Smith recorded his first Doctor Who scenes for The Time of Angels.

The new TARDIS in Doctor WhoThe redesign of the police box exterior harked back to the time machine seen in the Dalek movies of the 1960s, which featured the human Dr Who (Peter Cushing) who had built a time machine which he called "Tardis". A slight rewrite of the original text, but with a much bigger budget, the police box prob used in those films included the white windows and the St John's Ambulance badge.According to someone at the BBC, the change was instigated by new showrunner Steven Moffat.

"Steven wanted to stamp his own mark on the exterior as well as the interior, and he's a big fan of the Peter Cushing movie version, so re-added the logo!"

When pictures were first released of location work from The Time of Angels and Flesh and Stone, many Doctor Who fans were delighted. However, nine months on, it seems St John's Ambulance have just noticed.

"Our logo used to appear on police boxes because we trained the police in first aid and the badge indicated that first aid help and equipment were available.

"We're delighted that the St John Ambulance logo is back on the Tardis and hope it reminds people to learn first aid so that they can be the difference between a life lost and life saved."

The TARDIS redesign was written into the script for the first time in The Eleventh Hour, following a destructive regeneration at the conclusion to The End of Time. Of course, we won't mention the difference between the physical TARDIS prop and the one that materialised in time for River Song to get "sucked" on board in The Time of Angels, as that would be churlish.
