Posted: 30 Apr 2010 03:00 PM PDT Last Saturday's episode left us with Series Five's first cliffhanger. The Doctor, Amy and River were trapped by the Weeping Angels and they were closing in faster than the blink of an eye! Thankfully we don't have to wait much longer to find out what's going to happen next. The conclusion of the story, Flesh and Stone, airs at 6.25pm this evening on BBC1. Watch the trailer for the episode here. We've got some pics here and you can view three clips here. Meanwhile the results of last week poll to find out what you thought about first part, The Time of Angels, are now in. A whopping 79% of you thought the episode was worthy of the highest rating, and we can't disagree with that!
Can Flesh and Stone get any better? Join us tonight straight after the episode at 7.10pm to rate and share your thoughts! And let's hope the 5600 complaints the BBC received means there won't be a repeat of last week's Graham Norton fiasco!
Posted: 30 Apr 2010 11:45 AM PDT The Daily Telegraph reports a renewed surge in popularity of bow ties thanks to Doctor Who. A spokesman for Topman says sales have shot up by 94% since The Eleventh Hour was aired. The Guild of Tiemakers chairman, John Miln, said he was pleased the unusual trend had been kicked off by the show. Critic Charlie Brooker has continued his criticism of Nortongate with a rant against the schedulers for the intrusion of the cartoon Graham Norton over last weeks cliffhanger. He talked about the incident on his Channel 4 programme You have been Watching calling it a travesty. The programme can be seen on 4oD. Journalist Penny Andrews has written a long blog on the launch of Doctor Who, The Adventure Games, in Sheffield last week, while TalkTalk spends five minutes in the company of Alex Kingston.

Posted: 30 Apr 2010 10:00 AM PDT It’s been an agonising wait since last week’s cliffhanger, but its resolution is now just a stone throw away, as Flesh and Stone airs tonight on BBC One/HD at 6:25PM! The last time we saw them, the Doctor and his friends (and, for BBC One viewers, Graham Norton!) were trapped below the wreckage of the Byzantium, with Weeping [...]

Posted: 30 Apr 2010 06:58 AM PDT It seems that suits are coming back into popularity among men – and Doctor Who star Matt Smith is being cited as one of the reasons, reports The Scotsman, thanks to his natty bow tie. According to Slaters of Edinburgh, nothing significant has occurred as yet:
But given the effect Doctor Who has apparently had on Tweed, it is likely that after 4 years of David Tennant and now Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor suiting up in Steven Moffat's reimagined series, suits could well be on the way back in as a choice for chaps for general wear, rather than work, weddings, funerals and expensive nightclubs. I'm a regular suit wearer myself – however I wear my Ben Sherman with pride on account of my day job being largely casual attire. Can Doctor Who inspire an increase in suit sales? Given that some of the biggest bands of the last few years have all been snappily dressed in suits without pushing sales in any greatly significant direction, it seems unlikely – but I'm confident sales of dicky bow ties are set to rocket.

Jonathan Frid's Dark Shadows Return Posted: 29 Apr 2010 11:57 PM PDT Big Finish Productions is proud to announce that Jonathan Frid will be returning to the role of vampire Barnabas Collins for the very first time in The Night Whispers, an all-new Dark Shadows audio drama. As reluctant vampire Barnabas Collins, Jonathan Frid helped establish Dark Shadows as a pop culture phenomenon. Joining him for this special release is Emmy Award winner John Karlen as Willie Loomis, with legendary horror star Barbara Steele, who played Dr Julia Hoffman in the 1991 Dark Shadows remake on NBC. Dark Shadows audio producer and writer Stuart Manning comments: "Big Finish has been producing Dark Shadows audio dramas with the classic cast since 2006, and it's an honour to welcome Jonathan back as Barnabas for this special release." Dark Shadows: The Night Whispers will be released on CD in June as part of Big Finish's ongoing series of dramatic readings. Also out in June is London's Burning starring David Selby and Louise Jameson, followed in July by The Doll House, starring Marie Wallace, which concludes the current series. Posted: 29 Apr 2010 08:00 PM PDT Slightly earlier than last week, we've got a round up of the critical reaction to the latest episode of Doctor Who. The Time of Angels – starring Matt Smith, Karen Gilland and Alex Kingston – seems to have gone down a treat, with Steven Moffat's returning Weeping Angels displaying even greater powers than we saw in Blink. We'll start with SFX (who are currently giving away life sized cutouts of the Eleventh Doctor and Amy Pond), who concisely relate just how the episode develops from the viewer being in the position of one moment "knowing" the Angels and the next finding out they're even more fearsome.
Superlatives come thick and fast from The Guardian, meanwhile, as their reviewer seems to wet himself (and possibly his MacBook?) trying to convey just how good The Time of Angels is. It's OK, mate – we saw it!
Airlock Alpha were full of praise for Alex Kingston as River Song. Each of the reviews mentioned the enigmatic character, but this is an interesting observation that might explain why she was a little – shall we say – irritating at times during The Time of Angels.
Den of Geek noted that the pacing of The Time of Angels was more ponderous than the previous week's Victory of the Daleks.
Finally, the Telegraph was also positive, although they weren't too happy with one element early in the episode:
Overall – a very well respected episode of Doctor Who. If you're wondering if Flesh and Stone can conclude the opening episode in similar style, read our spoiler-free preview…

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 05:58 PM PDT The new look Daleks were unveiled with a collective "oh" earlier this month, as Doctor Who fans were brought face to face with a new style of travel machine that wouldn't look out of place in TV21 comic. Some have even suggested that the redesign is wholly financially motivated. According to Private Eye:
Meanwhile, the BBC has found itself again responding to concerned Doctor Who fans this month (that's three times if anyone's counting), this time in relation to the Daleks redesign, seen in Mark Gatiss' Victory of the Daleks.
As you may or may not know, Doctor Who is a huge money-spinner for the BBC. The Private Eye article suggests that the new Daleks have been introduced because kids across Britain already have a black Dalek or a red and gold Supreme Dalek – but they shouldn't forget that a new generation of kids are now starting to watch the show. However, money seems to be the focus of the article, with several references to BBC cost cutting. According to a "show insider" fans should:
We assume this means some reused costumes – hardly anything new in Doctor Who and certainly not since 2005. However it is worth noting that the Eye article also refers to a some disappointment in the Doctor Who upper echelons that the series (like other BBC dramas) was subjected to a budget cut while BBC Marketing were given £1 million to create the 3D cinema trailer… (With thanks to Ian) UpdateSpeaking of Daleks, it seems its not just the BBC or the estate of Terry Nation attempting to put the iconic aliens to cynical misuse. The Green Party have apparently used red, blue and yellow Daleks in a recent election campaign video, which has since been withdrawn.
