5.8: The Hungry Earth - DWO (Spoiler-Free) Preview

5.8: The Hungry Earth - DWO (Spoiler-Free) Preview
News Dated: 14/5/2010

Below is the DWO (Spoiler-Free) Preview for 5.8: The Hungry Earth:

The Hungry Earth kicks off the first part of this season's second two-parter in glorious fashion. We are yet again given a strong story that's executed to its full potential, with some great characters that you instantly connect with.

Meera Syal puts in a great performance as Dr Nasreen Chaudhry, who gets a little taster of what it's like to be a companion. Similarly, young Samuel Davies puts in a choice performance as the show's first dyslexic character, Elliot, who shares a poignant scene with The Doctor regarding his past.

Amy Pond is given very little to do in the episode, and without giving too much away, Rory is given a little more to do than usual as a result. We see Arthur Darvill's character much more comfortable as a member of the TARDIS team by now, and one can't help hoping he stays.

It is no secret that the story sees the long-awaited return of The Silurians (minus the Myrka...so far). In fact, we don't actually see a Silurian until a fair way into the episode, after a rather suspenseful 25 minutes. The lizard-like monster has been beautifully redesigned with a clever little accessory that bridges the old look, with the new.

Once more the line between the Classic Series and the New Series has been blurred, and it is definitely something that will please the traditionalists. In what feels a bit like an updated retelling of Jon Pertwee's The Silurians, writer; Chris Chibnall has clearly done his homework and produced a thrilling script that has been completed with relish.

As a comparative, The Hungry Earth is Series Two's The Impossible Planet meets Avatar - and one scene at the end, in particular, is as visually stunning and breath-taking as the latter.

As for the cliff-hanger, we are given more than just one situation that needs to be resolved, and there's a sense of urgency that will have you screaming at the TV as the credits roll.

Truly, wonderful stuff here. The Hungry Earth is another set piece that raises the stakes in a series that is getting better and better, and leaving the viewer wondering how on earth it can be excelled.

5 Things to look out for:

-  The Silurians have a new deadly way of attacking you!
-  The Doctor's coolest sunglasses ever!
-  2 x Amy & Rory's?
-  A church refuge a la Father's Day.
-  Blue Grass

Never Judge a Silurian by his Myrka

Posted: 20 May 2010 07:24 AM PDT

All of the most powerful creations in fiction often mirror ourselves in some way or another; monsters in fiction and fairy tales can show us truths not just on a person to person basis, but on the level of a society as well.

Cave dwelling Earth Reptiles, the SiluriansThe Silurians are a perfect example of this.

Within the Doctor Who universe, we have come into conflict with them for mastery of the Earth, but rather than being a creature that comes space, (a place beyond our reach) Silurians originate from the depths of mankind's past. They are a perfect foil for arrogant Humans as they are arrogant themselves, believing that they are the better of the two races due to their technology and the threats of destruction they can carry out.

This is a situation that has echoes from our own world – real life battles of prejudice and pride amongst claims of ownership over the Earth as they shout 'This is our planet' in defiance of Human society, the Silurians convinced that their judgment is supreme, while the Humans are the ape primitive/infidels who have no rights, especially not to live.

In both Silurian appearances in the classic series of Doctor Who this effect is seen. In both, they draw comparisons to the old Nazi/Soviet agents of the past or our modern terror cell. In Doctor Who and the Silurians, they are awoken by Human experimentation and use a nuclear reactor to revive more of their kind, and eventually after a coup by a more hostile faction of Silurians, resort to using a biological weapon to wipe out the Human population. With the Third Doctor's help the plague is neutralised, only for the military to move in and blow up the caves, an action the stranded Time Lord immediately condemns. This event marks the beginning of a sub plot that runs throughout the Silurian saga; the morals of military action and murder on a mass scale, or as the Doctor says in the episode:

'Present [the military mind] with a new problem and they start shooting at it.'

When they return in Warriors of the Deep , the Silurians are now aligned with their Sea Devil cousins and shown more in the light of diplomats who were tired of the peaceful path and who's goals were to launch a missile from a underwater base they were holding hostage. At least on TV, Silurians were the perfect model for the kind of real fears that we faced on the front page of the daily papers no matter what the era, but especially poignant in the eighties when the episode was shown amidst the threat of nuclear war with the Soviet Union (dominated by Russia).

Doctor Who left our screens in 1989 and it eventually gave way to getting our fix for the show in other forms of media, like audio plays and books, and like many other creatures we had seen in the past, the Silurians got a make over.

With the New Adventure novel Blood Heat (Jim Mortimore), we got see an alternate reality where the events of Doctor Who and the Silurians took a different direction; here the Third Doctor – and later most of the Human population - were killed, leaving a small UNIT group and other stragglers the only survivors on a world returned to a prehistoric environment.

Meanwhile The Scales of Injustice (Gary Russell) is a missing adventure that can be seen as a direct sequel to the same Third Doctor serial and explains away a ton of questions from the television story Warriors of the Deep, and ultimately shows a more peaceful Silurian approach with only a few extremists in the ranks, but ultimately it ends in blood shed.

The Silurians in Doctor Who

Finally, the Big Finish audio Bloodtide, features our whole creation as a race explained as a forbidden experiment carried out by a Silurian scientist.

On both sides of the conflict the Silurian and Human sides have those that wish for peace and those that would rather annihilate or segregate anything not like them. This mirror-holding makes the Silurians a race perfect for the darker, more intricately plotted tones of the new series of Doctor Who, allowing for a good deep plot that should have real world implications. Think of the subject matter offilms like Alien Nation and District 9, which have similar themes of an alien culture merging with ours, as well as some of the best of the past Doctor Who episodes like The Sunmakers or more recently Bad Wolf, story's that pull just enough material from the real life problems and woes of mankind, making the story more powerful and relevant, even though they are taking place in a fantasy world.

While the two-legged Earth Reptiles might have an advanced society, deep down inside we are scared and prejudiced as a culture. This flip-side of the coin is best represented in Warriors of the Deep, by which time 'They only wanted to live in peace'; the Fifth Doctor's statement makes the similarities and differences between us and them all the more real.

It will be fascinating to see what side of their nature will present itself when they return to our screens in The Hungry Earth.

The Silurians play up to the human fear of lizards and reptiles – but we are also afraid because the Silurians are also the monster lurking below the ground in the fairy tale, the thing waiting in the depths of some dark cave, watching you from the shadows. It is this too that make Silurians a better then average monster, they are in simple description the same old monster that has dwelt beneath our feet and our bridges for centuries, only they are more us then them, which makes them even more terrifying.

Benny: Season 11

Posted: 20 May 2010 01:59 AM PDT

Bernice Summerfield returns in August with four new audio releases, plus a new hardback collection of short stories. This eleventh season of adventures, starring the archaeologist from the 26th Century, will begin with a climactic, two-part conclusion to the long-running 'Braxiatel' story arc. The season midpoint, starting with the third release, will mark a new beginning in a new setting.

"This is a really exciting turning point for Bernice Summerfield – both the character and the series," says new producer John Ainsworth. "Listeners have been waiting a long time for the answers to some burning questions and now it's time to deliver. But by concluding the 'Braixatel' story arc half-way through the season, we're also giving new listeners a perfect opportunity to sample Benny and come on board. No prior knowledge of the characters or the series is required to understand and enjoy the third and fourth plays in this series. It's a fresh start."

The series kicks off with what is effectively a two-part adventure, Resurrecting the Past (August) and Escaping the Future (September), both by Eddie Robson and starring all the regular supporting characters from The Collection. "We've been building up to a resolution on the Braxiatel arc for years, and I don't think the scale of it will disappoint," says Eddie, who is also editor of this year's hardback book, Present Danger, the events of which are set between his two audio plays. "In order to really give the resolution the space it demands, we've given over this year's short story anthology to the wrapping-up events - the plays still make perfect sense if you don't read it, but it'll give you a broader view on the situation if you do. Everyone has a part to play - but will they all see the end of it? Present Danger will be published in September and includes stories by Kate Orman, Lance Parkin, Mark Clapham and Simon Guerrier.

Benny gets a new start from the third audio release in October with Year Zero by Jonathan Clements. This is followed in November by Dead Man's Switch by John Dorney and Richard Dinnick. Each is very much a self-contained tale but both fit into a new story arc that will continue and conclude in Season 12. This new beginning takes Benny back to basics and once again focuses on her skills and experience as an archaeologist. Lisa Bowerman, who plays Bernice Summerfield, is also excited about the new direction for the series: "After the dust settles on one chapter, she's going back to her boots and back to her roots. I can't wait!"

Bernice Summerfield - Season 11

Posted: 19 May 2010 11:18 PM PDT

Cold BloodBig Finish have announced the details for the Eleventh Season of the Bernice Summerfield Adventures.

Bernice Surprise Summerfield was originally created by Paul Cornell as a new companion of the Seventh Doctor in Virgin Publishing's range of Doctor Who Novels. Big Finish have been producing audio plays featuring the character since September 1998.

Four new audio adventures will be released this year, plus a new hardback collection of short stories. This eleventh season of stories, starring the archaeologist from the 26th Century, will begin with a, two-part conclusion to the long-running 'Braxiatel' story arc. The season midpoint, starting with the third release, will mark a new beginning in a new setting.

Story producer, John Ainsworth says
This is a really exciting turning point for Bernice Summerfield – both the character and the series, Listeners have been waiting a long time for the answers to some burning questions and now it's time to deliver. But by concluding the 'Braixatel' story arc half-way through the season, we're also giving new listeners a perfect opportunity to sample Benny and come on board. No prior knowledge of the characters or the series is required to understand and enjoy the third and fourth plays in this series. It's a fresh start.

The series kicks off with what is effectively a two-part adventure, Resurrecting the Past (August) and Escaping the Future (September), both by Eddie Robson and starring all the regular supporting characters from The Collection. Robson, who is also editor of this year's hardback book, Present Danger, the events of which are set between his two audio plays, says

Everyone has a part to play - but will they all see the end of it?"
Present Danger will be published in September and includes stories by Kate Orman, Lance Parkin, Mark Clapham and Simon Guerrier.

Summerfield gets a new start from the third audio release in October with Year Zero by Jonathan Clements. This is followed in November by Dead Man's Switch by John Dorney and Richard Dinnick. Each is very much a self-contained tale but both fit into a new story arc that will continue and conclude in Season 12. This new beginning takes the character back to basics and once again focuses on her skills and experience as an archaeologist.

Lisa Bowerman, who plays Bernice Summerfield, is also excited about the new direction for the series:
After the dust settles on one chapter, she's going back to her boots and back to her roots. I can't wait!

Big Finish have also confirmed they have commissioned a second season of Jago and Litefoot.

The first season of adventures featuring the characters of Henry Gordon Jago and Professor George Litefoot will be released next month. The duo first appeared as supporting characters in the classic Tom Baker story The Talons of Weng-Chiang.

Producer David Richardson said
We had such a fun time making the first series, and I'm really proud of it – I'm optimistic that people will be scared, excited and amused by these new audio adventures. There's a real buzz about it – and I'm delighted to say that as a result series two is already in a very advanced state of preparation. Obviously we don't want to say too much about it yet, as people have yet to enjoy the first four stories. But I can say that we have the brilliant David Collings joining the regular cast as Gabriel Sanders, while our guest stars in series two will include Vernon Dobtcheff and Simon Williams.
