Posted: 21 May 2010 08:46 AM PDT From the great CGI creatures of higher budgets and bigger wallets, to the 'man in the suit', use what you find in a skip, lower budget beasties- SFX's How to Make a Monster feature delves into the history of special effects and rummages up some nightmares both good and bad from Doctor Who's past. Where big ambitions meet lower budgets lie monsters. At the heart of Who's contributions to the list of 21 steps in the evolution of special effects lies an important lesson; If a monster is going to leave an ominous shadow on a child's memory it needs to break into something primal within ourselves. At the praiseworthy end of the scale lie perennial master race in waiting the Daleks for their groundbreaking use of metal casings. The cool, unimpeachable metal surface melded perfectly with the evil within that casing, a haunted space were real life terrors like the Nazis could fester and frighten us again. The worrying trend throughout this list is the growing number of subservient races of creatures. Featureless drones who hang in the shadows of 1980's Who without ever making an impression. The fault is not the design; it's the ideas behind them. The other 'man in the suit' examples such as the Gastropods, the slug-like creatures from The Twin Dilemma and the Myrka from Warriors of the Deep – a four-legged creature comprised of both ends of Dobbin the pantomime horse from Rentaghost and a wet sheet that left green paint all over the set maybe ropey examples of just what little a man can achieve in a costume but they were never anything more than warriors out to attack. There mere presence was assumed to be enough to scare; if they're given nothing special or memorable to do then that man in a suit is going to look awfully stupid. One controversial trend in FX history is the use of disabled actors in suits to portray monsters. It treads a fine line between performance and a 'freakshow'. Hit the link to the SFX website to read more, including how actor Nabil Shaban was at first wary of portraying Sil in Vengeance on Varos (and later Mindwarp), as well as plenty of monsters from other great sci-fi stories…

Posted: 21 May 2010 05:30 AM PDT Let's be honest, most of us are guilty at some point in our lives at pretending to sonic a door open after watching your favorite Doctor Who story. Some of us even go to great lengths to have a sonic screwdriver of our own. Whether it's a toy or a prop replica or a home made sonic from left over bit and bobs around the house. There are even those of use who can turn a closet into a TARDIS, those who make themselves a real Police Box and those who even can turn a nightstand into a TARDIS console. I'd love to pretend those are all kids from the age of 12 and under, but this is Doctor Who we're talking about right? "Kids" means from 80 and under. (Alternatively, watch it on YouTube) So, who like to make their home computer be their TARDIS console? Who wants it to look as authentic as they can? I know I do, and for the past 5 years I have been hoping that someone who help make that dream come true (I know, but it's my life) and the other day while surfing the youtube world I stumbled upon the perfect thing. To all the Moms and Dads turning their kids rooms into the TARDIS console room and to all the slightly taller fans who want to turn their work PC into the Doctor's trust companion, this link's for you. The artist responsible for this labor of love is known as Richard B and he has spent countless hours researching and perfecting a full motion screen saver of the 2005-2010 TARDIS scanner screen used by the likes of Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant. The work put into this piece is impressive to say the least, but what's even cooler is that you don't have to keep going to youtube to see it. Richard B has kindly left links at the end of the video to wallpapers and PC screen savers of his work for all to enjoy (fear not Mac users he is working on a Mac format screensaver as well.) Now kids and adults alike can turn their home computer into the most impressive time machine ever created! Makes me wish I were 10 again. But then I'm not so sure I ever really did grow up. I hope you enjoy this video as much as I did. Many thanks to Richard Brookes for all his hard work, and you can download his excellent screensaver and wallpaper right here.

Posted: 20 May 2010 11:04 PM PDT You may be curious to know what Christopher Eccleston has been doing to keep his stomach filled lately. The Guardian has reported that the former Doctor is set to have another lead role on a BBC1 drama called Accused. Having recently wrapped a portrayal of a nude John Lennon in the appropriately-titled Lennon Naked, alongside Torchwood's Naoko Mori, Eccleston is now set to play an adulterous plumber in a six-episode program produced by Sita Williams, with each installment focusing on a different central character. Jimmy McGovern will write the series. He previously worked with Eccleston on Cracker, sand uggested to The Guardian that the new show will contain minimal fluff and will progress straight to the point with each story:
Eccleston recently commented to the Radio Times on his more long-term ambitions, expressing interest in showing off his less serious side sometime soon:
Sounds intriguing indeed, but it looks like we've got at least one more Eccleston drama to go before we're allowed a taste of his sense of humor. Filming of Accused began this month and is scheduled to continue until August. Production on Eccleston's story will commence later this month and serve as one of the first two episodes of the series.
