The Pandorica Opens - Press Reaction

Posted: 19 Jun 2010 12:11 PM PDT

Doctor Who: The Pandorica OpensNB: Some links contain spoilers from the episode.

Press reaction to Doctor Who: Episode Twleve, The Pandorica Opens, has begun appearing with the Daily Telegraph calling the episode "Sensational, propelling the viewer on a gripping adventure with plenty of shocks and surprises, leavened with more emotional and humorous material for a heady mix."

The Express calls the story "classic fairytale, aimed, as always, at a family audience, with Matt Smith and Karen Gillan now complete in their respective roles". They make a plea to the BBC to safeguard the budget for the series saying it is one of the crown jewels and should be protected.

Den of Geek say "How good was that? We've been salivating at the thought of what Steven Moffat could do with a finale two-parter since he first got the top job on Doctor Who. The answer? A lot". The Guardian blog says you need to watch this episode at least three times to get a proper handle on every little bit that's going on. Thing is, you'll want to.

“Pay to Play” Doctor Who Games?

Posted: 19 Jun 2010 07:00 AM PDT

The BBC has announced plans to launch a "pay to play" service for some of its online games, Digital Spy has reported.

The scheme will start with £1 charges for users to play the online version of The Weakest Link which at the moment is free to play. It will be promoted at the end of each episode of the show.

This is rumoured to be part of a new way for the BBC to unlock fresh revenue as they prepare to sell off their very lucrative magazine division. The company recently reported that they were in profit for the last financial year by 140 million pounds and plan to hit the 200 million mark by 2012. Robert Nashak, BBC Worldwide Executive Vice President commented:

"BBC Worldwide is always keen to extend a brand beyond the traditional use, and social gaming is one of great interest to us."

The BBC announced this week that the first episode of its Doctor Who game (City of the Daleks) has been downloaded over 500,000 times in its first 12 days of availability! What the introduction of the pay for play scheme means for Doctor Who fans has yet to be seen…

Footnote to the Below

Posted: 19 Jun 2010 06:11 AM PDT

Just in case you wondered...

...I say "tried" to watch it, because I occasionally got embarrassed and turned over to Poirot on ITV3. Ironically, it was "Cat Among the Pigeons", the episode of Poirot written by Mark Gatiss. (Sort-of-double-irony: it's perhaps the least successful feature-length episode, but on this occasion, it's not Gatiss' fault. The structure of Christie's original makes it hugely unsuitable for ITV. Mind you, it might not have been a great idea to hire Gatiss for the story that requires a convincing boy-meets-girl romance at its heart. There's no massive alien parasite that eats them at the end, for one thing.)

Game Details to be Revealed

Posted: 19 Jun 2010 06:00 AM PDT

There's something lurching under the ice – fresh from battling Daleks on Skaro, Amy and the Doctor will be facing down an army of Cybermen in the Arctic for the second installment of Doctor Who: The Adventure Games.

Doctor Who game to feature Cybermen in part 2The episode, rumoured to be called "Winter of Terror", will see the TARDIS materialise in the Arctic where members of a survey team are turning from flesh to metal whilst digging away at something sinister under the ice.

From the early promo picture released on the BBC Website, the Cybermen will still be the Cybus Industry variant from 2006 onwards but will not feature the distinctive 'C' breast plate of that company. Instead they are emblazoned with a new emblem.

A special Q&A with Lead writer and Executive Producer Steven Moffat and Nicholas Briggs, voice of the Daleks and Cybermen, will be held at Gavinburn Primary School in West Dunbartonshire, Scotland, next Tuesday, where details about the next game will be released.

The pair will be fielding questions from pupils from 10 am. Other schools in Scotland can participate via the Glow Scotland site.

For those not still in education in Scotland a further Q&A with the Doctor Who team will take place in the afternoon and will be streamed on the BBC Website.

If you haven't played City of the Daleks yet, take a look at our review here, and Kasterborous editor Christian Cawley's review here.
