Posted: 23 Jun 2010 05:45 PM PDT Doctor Who star Matt Smith has revealed some of the thinking behind the character of the current incarnation of the Time Lord. Chatting to the Radio Times, Smith referred to a sense of the unpredictable, of a man with so much on his mind he doesn't quite have time for general chit chat and verbal interaction…
It's a fascinating angle to take, and one that seems to be developed from years of the Grand Moff watching Doctor Who; it certainly isn't an observation that has been actively applied to any other incarnations. We suspect this might come to define the Eleventh Doctor in future years as we look back on what is quite a thrilling and satisfactory era of Doctor Who. Matt Smith is interviewed in the new Radio Times, dated 26th June – 2nd July 2010, on sale now. Meanwhile, don't miss the final episode of the current run of Doctor Who – The Big Bang is on Saturday, June 26th at 6.05pm

Posted: 23 Jun 2010 10:01 AM PDT Did you ever wonder why things happen? I mean the things in your everyday life, little moment or large ones; do they mean anything? Yesterday I thought it was today and the day before I thought it was a few days before that. Not that big a deal but it really can mess with your perception of existence. So when I see things like this, it really makes me wonder about reality. 11,000 light-years away from our humble homes here on the planet Earth, in the constellation Sagittarius, there lives what can only be described as a crack in space. In time, who knows, but space, it sure looks like it. And if you have been following Doctor Who this year like I know you have then you will know what this means. Or at the very least that it isn't a good thing. Coincidence? Or did the Who production team have a look into the future? Did Steven Moffat sit down in 2009 at his computer to write this series and think that it was 2010? Did he happen to be surfing tomorrow's Internet and catch a glimpse sent back through wibbly wobbly, timey whimey ways? On June 4th 2010 the Daily Galaxy reported the news that NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope caught a picture of this crack constellation of Sagittarius and all the Internet was soon agog by the news. To make matters worse (as I said I can't seem to get my head straight about what day I am living and I now find that my favorite show has bled into reality) is the fact that this Saturday, THE Saturday that we have all been waiting for since Matt Smith's first series of Doctor Who began, just happens to be the same day that Amy and Rory were meant to be wed. June 26th 2010. Why is that so strange you say? "Surely Steven Moffatt planned this date months in advance" you say? Well yes, but did he plan for my cousin to have her wedding on the very same day the universe was meant to end? Surely this can not be a coincidence? Could this crack in space be affecting our lives and the future of our world and we don't even know it? Well, I'm convinced. Now then, what day is today again? (Congratulations Lesley and John! May you have a long life together!) (Via Sci Fi Wire)
“Discs that melted your brain” Posted: 23 Jun 2010 09:12 AM PDT Not content with scaring children's imaginations on Saturday nights Steven Moffat took Dalek and Cybermen sentries to Gavinburn Primary School in Old Kilpatrick, West Dunbartonshire, yesterday to scare up publicity for the second episode of the Doctor Who: Adventure Games. The Doctor's foes patrolled the school yard and posed for pictures with awed children before Moffat settled down to a Q&A session from pupils at the school and others frantically emailing in from others around Scotland. The event was chaired by Gillian Penny, Head Teacher at Gavinburn and Moffat's sister, to whom from a young age he would read Doctor Who stories to:
Moffat said he was consciously using memories that scared him as a child in his vision for Doctor Who:
The Grand Moff revealed that the crack in the wall from The Eleventh Hour comes directly from the bedroom of his ten year-old son Louis's bedroom. While he believes in the fairytale quality of Who Moffat stressed that the Doctor should never be horrible himself – something he hopes that the no guns policy in the show and second game episode Blood of the Cybermen contributes towards.
The game which available to download from the BBC Website on the 26th June (Mac users will be able to do so on the 30th June) sees the Doctor and Amy materialise in the Arctic where members of a survey team have been turning from flesh to metal as a familiar foe lies under the ice – check out gallery of images from Blood of the Cybermen. Meanwhile, The Big Bang airs this Saturday at 18:05 on BBC1 and BBC HD.
Posted: 23 Jun 2010 08:21 AM PDT During the 1970s, Douglas Adams wrote The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy and was a script editor and writer for Doctor Who. And yet, I don’t think in his wildest dreams he ever thought of combining his two big jobs from the 1970s*. Fortunately, the genius that is Andrew Orton did, and here is the glorious result, featuring a bang-on parody of Rod Lord’s animations from the Hitchhikers TV series and a pretty passable Peter Jones vocal pastiche… *Ok, using an abandoned Doctor Who film script to write Life, The Universe and Everything doesn’t count** ** Well, obviously it does, but I’m asking you to disregard it for the sake of my argument

World Famous! Or Getting There… Posted: 23 Jun 2010 05:35 AM PDT As modern Doctor Who keeps improving with each successive season, so grows its international renown! One of the latest mentions of the programme from a place other than the UK stems from the United States. More specifically, the CBS nighttime broadcast, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, featured an interview recently with fellow TV personality Chris Hardwick where, in between cracks about Harry Potter, Comic-Con, and robots, a few words about Matt Smith, David Tennant, and Karen Gillan were uttered. Beware: some of the remarks made in the video below may not be entirely family-friendly… Alternatively, you can watch here or see what BBC America has to say about the clip here. It's always pleasant to see our favorite show acknowledged in the general media elsewhere in the world. A few more nods like this and awareness of Doctor Who will increase so dramatically that before we know it, its worldwide ratings will outdo anything Simon Cowell has cashed-in on. But what's with this behaviour from Hardwick suggesting that women have no interest in Doctor Who? Perhaps it boils down to the fact that often in America, the show is regarded as something that only socially outcast males can enjoy and is therefore to be avoided at all costs. Either that or people are turned off because they think it's strictly forty-five minutes of sci-fi and involves none of the comedy, drama, or scares that we all know are there. On the opposite end of the spectrum, in the show's homeland of Britain, oftentimes a larger gathering of women are glued to their screens than men! Or was that only when David Tennant was incumbent? What do you think? Is Doctor Who a show more geared towards men, women, or both? Ladies, this is an excellent time to speak up! Also, where do you reckon Doctor Who is headed in relation with the rest of the planet? The comment section below needs some love!

Posted: 23 Jun 2010 04:12 AM PDT Still puzzling over the events of Victory of the Daleks and just why the old Daleks were consider impure? Promotional blurb for the new radio controlled battle Daleks explains it all – so simple! Many years ago, the Daleks sent out thousands of egg-shaped Progenitors containing the genetic coding of the race, so that new Daleks could be created whenever necessary. One of these Progenitors was found in war-torn England during the Second World War and transported to a Dalek ship. However, because the Daleks that found it had been genetically modified by their creator Davros, using his own DNA, the Progenitor did not acknowledge them as pure Daleks, until the Doctor identified them as such and the Progenitor created a new race of powerful Daleks as a result. Amongst these Daleks were the Red Drones and Blue Strategists. These fully functional radio controlled Daleks have full 360 degree movement control and built-in infrared combat system allowing for awesome battles between two Daleks! Features also include flashing lights, speech a poseable gun and arm. Infrared battle with two Daleks requires two Daleks of different control frequencies (27 MHz & 40 MHz). There are two new design Daleks to collect and one traditional "Ironside" Dalek in khaki finish, with one per pack requiring 6 x AAA batteries. With an RRP of £19.99 and expected between the 16th and 20th July (depending on your preferred model) these superb new toys are available to preorder from Forbidden Planet now for just £17.99!
