| Torchwood Comes To America - Lez Get Real Posted: 29 Jun 2011 02:42 AM PDT
| ||
| Posted: 29 Jun 2011 02:26 AM PDT By now you'll have heard this over and over again… Torchwood isn't abandoning Cardiff, it will always have its Welsh roots, it's still the same show despite being in America, and the list goes on. To take all that redundancy and throw in a dash of new information, we can now tell you that not only will Torchwood always feel like the Welsh show it's always been, it will physically return to the Welsh place it's always been. We've all known for months about Miracle Day's impending quick hop over to the British Isles from America to pick up Gwen, Rhys, and possibly Jack. But it's easy to assume that once the show lands in California, it's there for good. Not so, says executive producer Russell T. Davies:
Looking back on things, this is just what happened in Children of Earth, but on a smaller scale; the surviving members of the team left Cardiff for London, dealt with the alien threat, and (sort of) returned after it was all over. Does this mean that Miracle Day will be the only series that takes place in America? This remains to be seen, but at least it's now been more or less confirmed that it won't be the last season to feature scenes in Wales. And to anyone who still needs convincing that the next season won't be the same Torchwood we've grown to love, Captain Jack Harkness actor John Barrowman has a few words to say to you:
If, even after that small snippet of nice-sounding words, you continue to believe that old Torchwood is definitely gone forever, you might be a hopeless case. Episode 1 of Miracle Day, The New World, premieres Friday, July 8th at 10 PM ET/PT on Starz in the US and Thursday, July 14th at 9PM on BBC One in the UK.

| Posted: 29 Jun 2011 01:39 AM PDT The following is the plot synopsis for The New World which might be considered a spoiler One day, nobody dies. All across the world, nobody dies. And then the next day, and the next, and the next, people keep ageing – they get hurt and sick, but they never die. The result: a population boom, overnight. With all the extra people, resources are finite. It's said that in four month's time, the human race will cease to be viable. But this can't be a natural event – someone's got to be behind it. It's a race against time as CIA agent Rex Matheson investigates a global conspiracy. The answers lie within an old, secret British institute. As Rex keeps asking: "What is Torchwood?", he's drawn into a world of adventure, and a threat to change what it means to be human ... for ever. In the launch episode of Torchwood: Miracle Day, Agent Rex Matheson is impaled in a car crash and miraculously survives, while his analyst, Esther Drummond, sets out to discover what Torchwood is. Far away, in Wales, Gwen Cooper lives in hiding with her husband Rhys and daughter Anwen – she's the last surviving Torchwood member and is determined to stay hidden. In Kentucky, convicted murderer Oswald Danes survives his own execution. And when Esther meets the mysterious Captain Jack Harkness, assassins are activated to kill them all... Last week, Doctor Who Magazine editor Tom Spilsbury commented on Twitter that there would be slightly different versions of Miracle Day for the US and UK broadcast, adding yesterday that "they haven't started with one 'master version' and cut it for the UK. They've prepared two parallel edits for different markets." Russell T Davies had previously mentioned in his interview with Front Row that Jack is a 'childrens hero', and clarifies in the new Issue 436 of DWM that 'racier' scenes might be edited for a BBC audience. Attendees at last week's BFI preview had reported that The New World seemed longer than the fifty minutes originally reported in the Cannes press release; this is also confirmed in DWM, with UK episodes expected to run for some 54 minutes whereas episodes on Starz would run for 50-51 minutes. Davies pointed out that this isn't a cut to the US version, but extra material added to the UK one! | ||

| Torchwood Behind the Scenes Preview Posted: 29 Jun 2011 12:48 AM PDT Unless you've been ensnared in a great interstellar conspiracy you'll have noticed that Torchwood: Miracle Day – the brand spanking new cross-Atlantic incarnation of Cardiff's finest – will be airing on the 8th July at 10 pm ET/PT on the Starz Network. So to celebrate the return of the Torchwood alumni of Captain Jack (John Barrowman) and Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles) as well as a whole chunk of hot American talent playing new characters such as Rex Matheson (Mekhi Phifer), Oswald Danes (Bill Pullman) and Jilly Kitzinger (Lauren Ambrose) Starz have released this 11 min behind the scenes preview. Feeling like sales pitch to American audiences reminiscent of the electronic press kits of days gone by – complete with Gravel-Voiced Trailer Man and a smattering of talking heads in between the exciting new footage – the video is conclusive proof that all that extra American cash has gone directly in front of camera. Torchwood: Miracle Day is a co-production between BBC Worldwide in the UK and the Starz Network in the US and will air this side of the pond on Thursday 14th July at 9 pm. | ||

| Posted: 28 Jun 2011 11:35 PM PDT According to website Comic Book Movie, two actors from the world of Doctor Who are lined up for roles in season 2 of the HBO series, Game of Thrones. Christopher Eccleston (do you need an introduction?) and Tony Curran (Vincent Van Gogh in 2010's Vincent and the Doctor) are, according to rumour, both lined up for parts but nothing has been confirmed as yet. Den of Geek commented:
This is not based on any hard evidence as yet and so everything that you read can so far be taken with a large dose of salt and a shake from a familiar looking pepper pot at the same time. To add to the rumour mill however, it does sound like something that Curran might do, he would certainly not look out of place in such a drama. Eccleston would certainly bring a powerful performance to the table but is he really a "television series" actor these days? If reports are to believed from years ago (and it's a big if) then he wasn't too happy with the gruelling schedule for Doctor Who. Will he do it all again?

| Danes is “neither sympathetic or unsympathetic” Posted: 28 Jun 2011 08:50 PM PDT Torchwood actors are understandably getting a lot of attention right now, but curiously the majority of the focus seems to be on the returning cast; you don't see many of the newbies like Mekhi Phifer being mentioned much by the press, though it could be because nobody knows how to spell his name. However, there is an exception to this no-new-guys-being-interviewed conundrum, and his name is Bill Pullman. A versatile and well-known actor who's been in everything from Sleepless in Seattle to Independence Day, it's no surprise that Pullman's attracting a large chunk of the spotlight, even if he is playing a child-murdering pedophile named Oswald Danes. When AfterElton asked him if he ever felt obliged at all to try to make the audience feel sorry for such a generally-despised character type, the performer had this to say:
In other words, he's telling you to watch the show and decide for yourself if you find an Internet child stalker who happened to survive a death sentence to be rather warm and lovable. On a completely-unrelated-except-for-the-fact-that-it-has-to-do-with-Bill-Pullman-and-Torchwood note (Me? Addicted to hyphens? You must be joking!), it seems that everyone's favorite grownup-flavored Doctor Who spinoff has quite the following over at NASA, and yes, it's the same NASA that the Doctor himself barged into a few weeks/decades ago. Here's Pullman explaining further:
It must be a ploy… these astronauts are probably obsessively following anything with ties to the Doctor so they can track him down and strike him when he's least expecting it! Because it'd be entirely ridiculous to suggest that members of this space-loving organization might simply have a taste for alien-related shows.
