Moff's Paris Comic-Con Roundup

Posted: 04 Jul 2011 05:20 AM PDT

Blessed be to Friend of Kasterborous Aurélie Demonchaux, who has just been in touch with us to clarify just what went on at the Paris Comic Con with regards to Steven Moffat's appearance there this weekend!

The following reportage can be considered the full facts about what went on, as opposed to our earlier Google Translate-inspired attempt!

- Both the Masterclass on Sherlock's work as a writer and the Doctor Who conference were totally packed with people, who all greeted Le Grand Moff (=The Great Moff) properly as BBC Worldwide's Christina Dunn reported on Twitter.

Do check out her other Tweets on #comicconparis as well.

- On Saturday, while the general public was treated with a brilliant Sherlock program in honor of Steven Moffat, the Moff himself met with many French journalists and the result is many interviews all over the French-speaking websites! (note that Beans on Toast's interview with Moffat will be published a bit later on our website – we're working on it!)

- "Le Village" has an excellent 10-minute-long bilingual video interview (I HIGHLY recommend it!) where Steven Moffat tells us about the "transition" between RTD's era and Series 5, writing for different incarnations of the Doctor, about Madame de Pompadour and and many other topics – including about Sherlock :-)

- During the Doctor Who conference in public, Steven Moffat said that there would be the same number of episodes for Series 7, however, the broadcasting pattern would change. Moffat then concluded "I'll explain. Later." Meanwhile, concerning the fiftieth anniversary season in 2013, Steven Moffat said he had ideas, but that he would not tell us yet.

Aurélie tells us that she's barely scratched the surface of what happened at the event, and look out for more news concerning the event as we get it. Photos of the event can be found at the Beans on Toast forum, which now contains many pictures and reports and sharing of nice memories.

Series 7 Clarification (In French)

Posted: 04 Jul 2011 05:09 AM PDT

As you might expect, the Paris Comic Con event at the weekend which saw Steven Moffat appearing as a special guest featured some questions and answers concerning Doctor Who Series 7.

However, we don't speak very good Francais, so have opted to use the latest in technological advances to find out what was said.

So, in our best French (thanks to Google Translate; no telepathic translation circuits at Kasterborous Towers) here's a summary of what was said.

At first, the dour comedy genius simply shared that

'Contrary to what you may have heard, there will be the same number of episodes next year."

However, it seems that later, at the end of the conference, Steven Moffat returned to the subject adding:

"There will be the same number of episodes. But it's true that there will be a change in the mode of distribution. I would explain it all. Later."

The phrase "mode of distribution" is, sadly, a translation French, which itself was a translation of English. So, it could mean that the series will be spread out across 2012, or perhaps that some of it will air online or even in theatres, although that would come as a considerable surprise at this stage.

Who's Secure?

Posted: 04 Jul 2011 12:46 AM PDT

Recently, there has been a lot of gossip going on regarding the future of Doctor Who. Announcements have been made regarding the show's future and things are shaping up to be nice and stable, Doctor Who has been renewed up until at least 2013!

The BBC recently announced that it had ordered 13 more episodes of Doctor Who plus another Christmas special. However fans have been worried by the fact that not all of the new episodes ordered will be shown in 2012 but are to be split between 2012 and 2013.

At least that's the way things are looking for now.

But don't panic, before you all head to the phone to call up the head of the BBC and demand to know what's going on, just sit back and relax.

The simple fact is that budgets are tight for the Beeb right now and the show is having its massive fiftieth anniversary in 2013, so they're bound to be planning something big and spectacular. No one (apart from a select few we imagine) knows what the BBC is going to do but it'll be something breathtaking, of that there's no doubt. It'll cost lots of money and when they do eventually tell us their plans, we'll probably all start hyperventilating out of sheer excitement but as to the announcement of episode cuts, don't let it bother you, the show isn't going anywhere, as Steven Moffat had to say in the recent Doctor Who Magazine:

"Doctor Who's future is absolutely secure at the BBC, and in fact there's more than we've even told you about so far…and as for scheduling – we're not being vague, we're being secret. Doctor Who is, and remains a major weapon in the BBC's arsenal – we don't tell the opposition when it's going to be deployed."

So everyone stop panicking!

More Doctors for Miss Song?

Posted: 03 Jul 2011 10:52 PM PDT

We know that River Song (Alex Kingston) first met the Doctor in her past and his future but just how far into the Doctors future is that one Doctor who swept Miss Song off her feet?

That's the possibility raised by Kingston on BBC Breakfast where she hinted that her time travelling in the TARDIS may not be restricted to just the tenth and the eleventh Doctors:

"[River] met a Doctor in the future – which is my past – and that Doctor is a person [she] had a very strong relationship with. But it may not necessarily be this Doctor."

Of course the only person who can answer that is Chieftain Moffat who's not exactly willing to spill even the slightest detail.

Regardless of how many other Doctors River will flirt with Kingston also told Doctor Who Magazine that as long as her character continues to grow she'll keep playing her:

"It's not often, as a woman, that you find such a fabulous, kick-ass role to play, but I think, in order to make her a fully-rounded character, there have to be real, hidden emotional depths that are slowly revealed, so I'm loving all that. She's an amazing character.
"I love playing her, and I love that she's been embraced – not just by parents, but also by kids, because that makes her sort of ageless. She's naughty, irreverent and fun…and she gets the best entrances and exits every episode. Nothing is too bizarre for River. She's fabulous."

She's certainly lots of fun…

Blake's 7 - New Audiobooks and Novels in 2012

Posted: 03 Jul 2011 07:07 PM PDT

Big Finish Productions is thrilled to announce that it has signed a licence deal with B7 Enterprises to produce original audiobooks and novels based on Terry Nation's popular science fiction series Blake's 7.

Blake's 7: The Liberator Chronicles will be launching in Spring 2012 on CD and download, and will be performed by the original stars of the TV series. Each box set will contain three discs, with each disc comprising a separate adventure performed by two of the show's stars. There will be two box set releases each year.

The Blake's 7 original novels will be released in hardback editions, each of approximately 60,000 words. There will be two novels per year – thus ensuring there's a new Blake's 7 release every three months!

Jason Haigh-Ellery, executive producer of Big Finish, says: "As a huge fan of Blake's 7, it is a series that I have always wanted Big Finish to be involved with – and now we have the chance due to a ground breaking agreement with B7 Enterprises. It's something that Andrew Mark Sewell and I have been discussing for several years and I am so pleased that we have come to an agreement."

Nicholas Briggs, executive producer adds: "'Blake's 7 is something our listeners have been asking us to produce for ages, so I'm so pleased that we're finally delivering!'"

Andrew Mark Sewell, managing director of B7 Enterprises says: "We've long been an admirer of the audio dramas produced by Big Finish and are delighted that they will be lending their considerable talents to recapturing the spirit of the classic Blake's 7 series with a series of new novels and audio plays. Even though thirty years has passed since the original television series ended, we're sure that these new novels and audio stories will recapture the magic of Terry Nation's original creation and reignite people's passion for this seminal show."

The audio series will be produced by David Richardson, while Xanna Eve Chown is books editor.

"I have two loves in science fiction," says David, "and they are Doctor Who
and Blake's 7. And now I get to produce both on audio! I couldn't be happier."

"The Liberator Chronicles will be a series of exciting, character-driven tales that remain true to the original TV series. We're aiming for authenticity – recreating the wonder of 1978 all over again!"

Blake's 7: The Liberator Chronicles launches in February 2012 and is available for pre-order at bigfinish.com.

Blake's 7: The Novels launch in May 2012 and are available for pre-order at bigfinish.com.

A year-long subscription offer to the Blake's 7 range is also available.
