Torchwood Miracle Day Review

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 01:05 PM PDT

Clint Hassell gives his verdict on the first episode of Torchwood Miracle Day – The New World.

In Torchwood: Miracle Day, the fourth series of the Torchwood franchise, mankind suddenly finds itself incapable of death. People continue to get sick, and injuries occur, yet every single person on the planet continues to live. With a population boom looming and panic beginning to spread, the American government seeks out the secret Torchwood Institute to help solve the mystery of the "miracle." By combining more-compelling characters with a faster pace, increased action, and genuine humor, Miracle Day manages to recapture the feel of early Torchwood episodes while maintaining the epic-quality of the single-story format and the deeper philosophical ponderings of previous Torchwood offering, Children of Earth.

The New World Preview

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 06:58 AM PDT

With Torchwood broadcasting on Fridays in the USA and the following Thursday in the UK, we're striking a not-too spoilery balance over the next few weeks with our coverage of Series 4 of Russell T Davies' Doctor Who spin-off.

The New World airs on Starz from 10 pm this evening, while the UK follows suit on Thursday, July 14th at 9 Pm.

Very brief details can be found on the Starz website concerning the synopsis for Torchwood: Miracle Day, episode 101. In fact, this is all you will find:

Ep 101: 'The New World' When death itself comes to a halt, the whole world faces its greatest danger yet. CIA agent Rex Matheson has only one clue – Torchwood.

Instead, you'll have to head to the UK to find a more comprehensive synopsis for the episode.

In The New World, the launch episode of Torchwood: Miracle Day, Agent Rex Matheson is impaled in a car crash and miraculously survives, while his analyst, Esther Drummond, sets out to discover what Torchwood is. Far away, in Wales, Gwen Cooper lives in hiding with her husband Rhys and daughter Anwen – she's the last surviving Torchwood member and is determined to stay hidden. In Kentucky, convicted murderer Oswald Danes survives his own execution. And when Esther meets the mysterious Captain Jack Harkness, assassins are activated to kill them all…

And to get you in the mood before the big kick-off tonight, a few snaps!

With the new series of Torchwood imminent in the USA and set to follow soon after in the UK, it's time for us to clarify our plans for reviews given the scheduling of the Miracle Day series…

Now as you're aware, each episode of the new series of Torchwood will be airing initially in the USA before its UK broadcast a few days later.

Kasterborous is utilizing our USA-based contributors Brian A Terranova, Thomas W Spychalski and Patrick Riley to cover the reviews for the series, which will be available over the weekend after each episode airs on Starz.

This may result in some spoiler situations for our readers; we'll attempt to make the warnings as clear as possible, but do tread carefully. If you wish to remain Miracle Day spoiler-free over the next few weeks, try not to click any Torchwood-related links anywhere on the web!

BBC responds to complaints over Torchwood scheduling

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 05:53 AM PDT

The BBC has posted a response to complaints from UK fans over the scheduling of Torchwood: Miracle Day. BBC One will broadcast episodes six days after the US broadcast and five days after the Australian and Canadian broadcasts which has angered some fans. The Hollywood Reporter and The Guardian blogged about the delay.
Torchwood, Scheduling, BBC One
Publication date: 8 July 2011

Complaint

We received complaints from viewers unhappy that the new series of Torchwood will be broadcast in America before the UK.

The BBC's Response

We are pleased to announce that Torchwood will return to BBC One at 21.00 on Thursday 14 July.

Starz in the US have the contractual right to the World Premiere, that relates to the deal that was done and ultimately this has created better value for licence fee payers.

Contractually, the broadcasters in other territories can transmit from the next day onwards but being as close to the transmission in the US is not the only factor in the scheduling decision. We have identified what we think is the best slot for BBC One viewers and have also ensured that it's within a week of transmission in the US.

Eve Myles was interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter and gave her thoughts about the fan reaction to the delay of the UK broadcast.
THR: We're sure you've heard the rancor out of the UK about BBC's delayed premiere of the show. What would you like to say to those fans?

Myles: We never, ever, ever wanted to take this show away from the original fans. What we always wanted to do with the show was give them a gift every year, something wonderful, a big, big present. And if that present isn't good enough, we aren't going to give it to you. We've made you the best, best series yet. And it works out that it will be a week after the U.S. showing. And obviously we have nothing to do with that -- me nor John [Barrowman] or [showrunners Russel T. Davies and Julie Gardner]. But, just hold on tight. I'd just like to remind them that they're our fans. We want them to sit back and enjoy it, be proud of it like we are, and to stick with us. If it was up to me and John, we'd have it to them straight away. But, it's not.

THR: So, do you understand where they're coming from?

Myles: Oh my God, of course I do. I was the biggest Six Feet Under fan in the world. And if that had happened, it went out there first and it didn't come out here. That did happen with the first series. It went out there and we had to wait. And the reason why I was so frustrated and kind of pissed off about it is because I couldn't wait to see it. I was so excited about seeing it. You just want to get to see it, don't you? I mean fair play. These people have waited just over two years for this next season. You know, they've waited long enough. I wish I had the ten episodes here and I can invite them to my house and we could all watch them together. You know, tonight. Unfortunately, my house isn't big enough and I only have one [episode] myself [she laughs]. Yeah, I'd like to say that if I had something to do with it that this wouldn't be happening. But, sit tight, because it is a fantastic ride.

Davies Wields a Cucumber!

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 05:15 AM PDT

That Russell T Davies is a busy and inventive little bee isn't he? Over the last six years he's not only been the major driving force behind resurrecting the greatest television show on the planet (obviously it's Doctor Who – what did you think we were going to say?), he's also created two very successful spin-offs from that very show.

But that's only in Britain. Over in the US of A, he's managed to remake his British TV series Queer as Folk into a very well received American show and Torchwood is also getting a touch of the American glamour.

And with all the creative talent that he's poured into his beloved shows, he's now creating another one, titled Cucumber. All that's known at the moment is that it's a "gay themed project", whatever that may mean. This is something that Russell has mentioned he would be doing over the last few years.

It's fantastic that the writer is getting the full success that he deserves but let's hope that this doesn't cause him to drift too far away from the Doctor Who universe. Let's hope that he'll return in a few years' time to write at least one full Doctor Who episode for the Eleventh Doctor, that would be truly fantastic.

You can either listen via the link above or the technically minded can subscribe to the RSS feed and we're also listed in iTunes, just like a real podcast!

What is Miracle Day?

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 10:28 PM PDT

Get old but never die. Remain sick but never die. Get severely injured but never die. As a devils bargains go this one doesn't offer many sweeteners to go with everlasting life.

Its like being offered a ham sandwich without the bread. No amount of buttery ham will change the fact its not what was promised.

Naturally John Barrowman (Captain Jack Harkness), Eve Myles (Gwen Cooper) et al avoid revealing too much but the video does come with a raft of brief new clips which range from "shouty moody" to "scowly moody" depending on what's been said.

Although it does give a good impression of where the series is heading in the next ten episodes…
