Behind the Silence

Posted: 09 Jul 2011 06:27 AM PDT

Giving children nightmares and causing no small amount of chin stroking by everyone else- Series Six of Doctor Who would have been a lesser place without the calculating menace of The Silence – who you can learn more about in this exclusive clip from Wired.com – taken from the Doctor Who Series 6 – Part 1 set which is to be released on the 11th July.

The clip taken from the Monster File extra from the DVD/Blu-ray release shares the secrets behind making the Silence, a collaboration between Head Writer Steven Moffat and Millennium Effects guru Neill Gorton.

Taking their influence from Edward Munich's iconic painting The Scream – The Silences' party piece became the high pitched cry – right before they decimate you to atoms:

"It's all very well that you can't remember them and they're everywhere, but they needed to have a superpower that was scary, intimidating and utterly horrific. The way they kill is to borrow the static energy around them, draw it in and fire that energy out in one giant bolt into the heart of the person that they want to kill, and that just completely wipes them from the face of the Earth."

Chilling or thrilling? A scare too far or a much needed threat? What ever your opinion of The Silence no-one can fault the brilliant iconic design work that has gone into creating one of the series most effective foes…

Doctor Who Series 6 – Part 1 is available to pre-order on DVD from Amazon for £15.93 and will be released on the 11th July.

From Paris, with Videos

Posted: 09 Jul 2011 05:26 AM PDT

Aurélie Demonchaux, our fantastic friend of the French Doctor Who forum Beans on Toast – who you'll remember gave us a brilliant little update on all the happenings at the Steven Moffat staring Paris Comic Con – has been busy compiling even more pictures, videos and titbits from this years event.

For those not in range of the TARDIS translation circuits or in possession of a Babel Fish (which will please God); do not worry – not all of them are in French!

Speaking of the difficulties of translation Aurélie has helped clarify a few issues arising from fan questions put to Moffat at the event- the first concerning the ultimate fate of Rory Williams the man for whom Death is a frequent visitor:

"1st question: a fan asked Steven Moffat "Why do you keep killing Rory ?" And Moffat answered "I also keep bringing him back!". He went on to say that he had only really killed Rory once, actually. Also, there'll be a "pay-off" for Rory's repeated deaths. Moffat also implied that, with him being a bit of a "romantic", we should not worry too much about Rory's future."

Moffat was also asked about the origins of kick ass Archaeologist River Song, which he helpfully expanded upon in this fan-filmed video.

Up next is another fan video only this time featuring Moffat discussing the possibility of Captain Jack jumping onboard the TARDIS again and, just what might happen if the Eleventh Doctor jumped into the Torchwood universe.

Finally, not only do we have our lady on the ground Aurélie sending us missives from across the channel but also her friend Aude Boubaker, who has kindly offered Kasterborous her amazing photos of the event – say hello everyone!

Ghost Train Update!

Posted: 09 Jul 2011 01:26 AM PDT

Great news on the Ghost Train competition front – last Sunday marked the closing day for our latest quest to find a comic book artist, and we have had a great reaction with nine very talented people getting in touch!

Due to a few personal things going on here at K Towers we left the door open for a few more days before settling down and preparing a dossier of the entries to send out to each of the judges (yes, we really do take this that seriously!)

Over the next few days they'll all be receiving emails with instances of the entrants best examples, and from here we will be whittling the selection down to three semi-finalists who will be invited to produce a single page of the script. From here, the judges will once again decide, this time on a winner, and then the real work begins!

We're REALLY pleased with the quality of the entries, so this is going to be as tough a call as it was choosing between Justin Abbot and Rick Lundeen (and eventually we used both of them) for our previous Time Leech serial in 2009

Torchwood Won't Disappoint

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 10:33 PM PDT

Torchwood, that funny little spin off show that came from an utterance in Doctor Who in 2005 and then grew in the most phenomenal way to be one of the most popular shows made by the BBC, is not the same as it was.

What started out as a thirteen episode a year, monster-of-the-week show has now regenerated into a different animal altogether. This is good, because most television shows rarely survive long years if they don't change a bit now and then.

Viewers who tune in this month to watch Miracle Day, the latest Torchwood adventure split up into ten epic parts, may be forgiven (if they haven't tuned in since series one that is) for thinking they were watching a completely different show.

But stick with it, faithful viewers, because Captain Jack himself, John Barrowman, has promised that this is still the same Torchwood that we all love and know. It's just got a bit more glittery.

Speaking to The Boston Herald, the actor said:

"We're still the same edgy Torchwood [and we] still have the edgy characters and storylines that people seem to like."

There's no doubt in anyone's mind that this new series of Torchwood will be a slightly different beast considering how it has been made but with the same regulars from before and Russell T Davies firmly in the captains chair, it's going to be one heck of a show.

Yes ladies and gentlemen, one heck of a show…

Teasing Torchwood

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 09:24 PM PDT

By now our Starz-subscribing American readers will have already seen The New World, so this one's mainly for our loyal UK audience who continue to eagerly await Thursday.

As is the norm for onscreen installments of Whoniverse canon, there are always one or two websites who see it ahead of time and post a list of ten-or-so one-sentence teasers to make us jealous whet our appetites.  Episode 1 of Torchwood: Miracle Day is no exception and this time, Digital Spy have created the almighty list; though to be honest, this lot is mostly quoting lines from the show without mentioning who says them or in what context they were said, so there's not really much there that's easy to speculate about.  Click the link from the previous sentence to see it all, or just read below to see the best ones and this writer's interpretation of them…

  • There's a cheeky reference to a deceased former Torchwood member (and no, it's not Ianto).

Hmm… with Ianto ruled out, that leaves just Owen, Tosh, Susie, all the members of the team that were murdered in the Fragments flashback, and the casualties of Canary Wharf.  That makes it easy.  Of course, when you consider Miracle Day's premise, that of people who should be dead not being that way, we can probably narrow this "cheeky reference" down to either Owen or Susie.

  • The chief villains from Torchwood: Children of Earth also get a mention, in a roundabout sort of way.

Hold on… I thought one of the main points of Children of Earth was to ask who the real villains are: aliens hoping to get a buzz off children or the members of humanity willing to hand them over.  As that was left up to the viewer to decide, we're either going to hear about the 456, or that "lucky" prime minister and his band of government agents.

  • A certain drug familiar to Torchwood fans is utilised once again.

Retcon.  No doubt about it.

  • "First sign of trouble, you go running off with Captain Jack B*llocks."

Undoubtedly a line from a character we're all familiar with, as A) that would be a very odd thing for a newbie to say and B) all the newbies are Americans anyway, and "b*llocks" isn't a traditional word in their vernacular.  Plus that quote is totally something Rhys would say to Gwen.

  • Wales is the British equivalent of New Jersey.

Apparently that'll be brought up in the story somehow… Personally I don't have enough experience actually being in the UK (read: none) to agree or disagree with this statement, but I will say that New Jersey sure does suck.

Torchwood: Miracle Day has already kicked off in the USA and airs Fridays at 10PM ET on Starz.  In the UK, the first episode premieres this Thursday at 9PM on BBC One.
