The Miracle!

Posted: 01 Aug 2011 11:37 AM PDT

Starz has had a successful launch of the new Torchwood series, Miracle Day. New episodes of Torchwood: Miracle Day air Friday nights at 10:00.

Recently, Starz brought the cast of Torchwood to San Diego Comic Con where they participated in a screening of the third episode as well as a panel. You can take a look at that panel here:

There were also plenty of wonderful interviews that happened over the course of the Comic Con weekend. If you're interested, leave a comment saying so, and I'll gather a collection of them in an upcoming blog post.

For those lucky viewers who have Ipads or Iphones, you can check out the original motion comic Torchwood: Web of Lies. The series is written by Jane Espenson and features the voice talents of John Barrowman, Eve Myles, and Eliza Dushku. Web of Lies is an interactive, enhanced story that gives away clues to the sinister forces behind the "miracle" of Miracle Day. Go check out the first episode on You Tube here:

For more information on Web of Lies, including how to download each new episode that will be released in tandem with new episode airings of Miracle Day, check out this website.

For those of you who still pine for some more traditional Torchwood tales, there are three BBC Radio Plays that take place just before and just after the Children of Earth mini series. There are also three new novels in the works. Stay tuned for more information on those.

Moffat Reappraised

Posted: 01 Aug 2011 08:16 AM PDT

What hasn't been said in criticism levelled at the Moffat era of Doctor Who is that most of the complaints: 'Its changed too much', 'the writing is bad' 'its too sexualised' have all been levelled at the show before.

They're not unique to Moffat's rule at all. They are the general gripes and moans that come with watching a programme that can give the greatest and occasionally toss the worthless in our general direction.

In an attempt to address these criticisms Den of Geek's James T. Cornish has asked the burning question: Is Doctor Who really in trouble?

Taking on each criticism the article adds a sober, common sense perspective where other mediums may have jumped on the issue.

Although its readiness to dismiss the Private Eye rumours out of hand – especially using the example of Planet of the Dead's budgetary issues after the damage to the iconic double decker (surely a one off accident is different to the internal management problems that Private Eye reports?) – is a bit disappointing after the considered approach it takes to:

Doctor Who becoming too dark:

"Doctor Who has always had a dark streak running through it, right from the very first episode…In The Daleks' Masterplan, Sara Kingdom was aged by the Daleks' Time Destructor until she turned to dust… Not to mention the Master's penchant for eating the homeless in The End Of Time.

And if you don't think Midnight is dark, then you're made of sterner stuff than most people.

It's changed too much:

"In 1970, Doctor Who was given a radical overhaul. It was in colour, the producers and script editors had changed, and the Doctor was stuck on Earth helping UNIT. From then on, the series went from strength to strength.

Doctor Who's success is rooted in how freely it can change."

And Doctor Who has become too sexual:

"There's been a pseudo-sexual element to Doctor Who since the 1960s. It's there to keep the dads and teenage boys watching. Why else do you think the costume designers put Wendy Padbury (the Second Doctor's companion, Zoe) in such short skirts?"

The article is well worth a read if not only to renew/validate your faith in Moffat but to look at the great history this show has and that, even during the best times, there are always criticisms.

So So Special Launch

Posted: 01 Aug 2011 04:09 AM PDT

A huge thanks to everyone who came along to the launch of Rob Shearman's new book, Everyone's Just So So Special, on Friday night and made it such a success. As you can see from our picture, Rob's editor Xanna Eve Chown came along, as did Big Finish stalwarts David Richardson and Nick Briggs, and a lovely time was had by all!

The book tells the history of history itself, with one tale per century. Discover the inside story of some of the world's forgotten heroes and villains and learn that from the most renowned figures to the lowliest who ever lived, everyone really is just so so special. The collection is currently available in hardback for a mere £14.95, and you can order it by clicking here. If you'd like to become fully immersed in the history of the world as seen by Rob, however, there are still 15 special edition copies of our leatherbound edition available.

With each copy sold (at a mere £40), Rob will write a brand new, original short story starring a fictitious ancestor of the book's purchaser (or a nominated other party, if you're buying the book as a gift!). The stories will all ultimately be made available online, so everyone will be able to read them all, but only the purchaser will have a hard copy, written out in Rob's own fair hand (and suitable for framing!). If you'd like to order one of these once-in-a-lifetime purchases, click here. You can also buy the normal leatherbound edition for £29.95 by clicking here.

If you'd prefer to wait, there will also be a paperback edition, which is released next year, date to be announced. To pre-order that, click here.

The launch, which featured a reading by Rob from the book and an interview conducted by media man and frequent Big Finish writer Matthew Sweet, will be made available as a podcast sometime in the near future, so if you weren't there you'll be able to hear what you missed!

The Return of Davros

Posted: 31 Jul 2011 10:13 PM PDT

After a break of six years, Terry Molloy will be returning to the role of Davros in a Big Finish audio drama in January 2012. The Curse of Davros finds the Sixth Doctor and his new companion Flip (Lisa Greenwood) setting course for the Battle of Waterloo, and facing the combined might of the Daleks and their evil creator.

"I was delighted to hear that Davros was to return to the Big Finish fold in a new adventure with the Sixth Doctor," says Terry, "and I was thrilled to be asked once more to don the mantle of the Doctor's nemesis. The Curse of Davros is a an exciting return for the creator of the Daleks, and will deliver some unique surprises and thrills for the fans of Davros..."

The mini-season continues in February with The Fourth Wall by John Dorney, in which the travellers arrive on the planet Transmission. "The Fourth Wall is a cautionary tale about not getting too involved with our entertainment," says John, "and offers something of a baptism of fire for Flip as her tendency to not look before she leaps leads to her paying a heavy penalty. Saying anything more would spoil it... let's just add that you shouldn't get complacent when listening. The light tone is very much about leading you into a false sense of security. Make no mistake - something awful is about to happen.

"It's a story that's been in my head for ages and it's great to finally get a chance to get it out. I came up with the concept for the monsters about twenty years ago and have never quite let them go. And I'm delighted to be writing it for Colin, who I adored on TV and has always been my favourite BF Doctor, and the lovely Lisa, whose character is so fresh and vibrant and just plain fun to write for. "

The guest cast for this story includes Julian Wadham (The English Patient, Downton Abbey) as Augustus Scullop, while Yasmin Bannerman (Doctor Who: The End of the World) plays Dr Helen Shepherd.

March sees the release of Wirrn Isle by William Gallagher, which takes the TARDIS to the Nerva colonies on Earth, in a story set after The Ark in Space. 'The Wirrn had gone down so well with listeners in our Eighth Doctor story Wirrn Dawn that we were really keen to get them back," says executive producer Nicholas Briggs. "The trick was to find another strong story for them that wasn't just a reworking of The Ark in Space or Wirrn Dawn, and I think William Gallagher has come up with an entirely new story, with lots of very real characters with the kind of emotional concerns that we can all identify with."

Tim Bentinck (David Archer in The Archers) plays Roger Buchman, Jenny Funnell (As Time Goes By) is Veronica Buchman, while Dan Starkey (Doctor Who: A Good Man Goes to War) is Sheer Jawn.

Kasterborous doesn't advise living out your fantasies via cardboard (unless you're building a fort…we're definitely a pro-fort site) – for one, it's weird and secondly there will be chafing.

However we're also painfully aware that most of us are 'aesthetically challenged' and will never be able to mimic our hero and whisk a hot companion away to a far off exotic land (not unless Russian brides go weak at the knees for pristinely maintained Adipose dolls.)

Eager to cash in on all this anxiety and nerdiness is this life-size cardboard cut-out (or standee to legitmise the whole 2-D representation business) of the lovely Mrs. Pond dressed resplendently in her Honeymoon attire.

Now you can have your own Amelia to have, hold and to generally stand around looking good… oh so good… or if you own a small business you can us her to fed off thieves at the night. It won't work but it's the kind of Law Enforcement that we can get behind.

Posted: 31 Jul 2011 08:14 PM PDT

Forbidden Planet has listed a new Action Figure that you can pre order now, one that hopefully no one can say that they own already!

River Song Pandorica ChairThe latest offering is called "River Song Pandorica Chair" which is literally a figurine of River from The Pandorica Opens, dressed in her combat gear and the Pandorica chair in which both the Doctor and Amy are placed in.

This might be the ideal companion piece (get it? Companion piece? No?…Forget it then) for some of the other Pandorica themed pieces that are available from the website. You could have a Pandorica before it's open and this could serve as the Pandorica opened to reveal its full menace!

The figure is available to pre order now at the agreeable price of £22.99. However do beware that shipping will not be taking place until at least 22nd August 2011.

For those of you that have every action figure, you definitely will not have an open version of the mysterious Pandorica, so this is the opportune moment to build on your collection and start to actualise your version of how the episode should have gone!

Or you could just put it on a shelf, whatever's good for you…
