Ultimate Regeneration Ebook!

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 06:54 AM PDT

Time for an update on Ultimate Regeneration now, the first book to be published by Kasterborous which covers the Russell T Davies era of Doctor Who.

We first announced the book back in late 2010 (although work began long before this) and opened it up to pre-orders; a few delays took us through to February 2011, where graced by Anthony Dry's awesome cover art the book shifted well over 100 copies.

Six months on we have a handful of copies remaining from the initial run of 250, thanks to loyal Kasterborous readers and the efforts of Martin and Brian at the wonderful Who-ray! shop in Stockton-on-Tees who have stocked the book and hosted a couple of signing sessions.

So the time has come to announce the release of the eBook version of Ultimate Regeneration!

Available from Lulu in both print and eBook formats, Ultimate Regeneration can now be purchased for reading on any type of eReader device, such as iBooks on the Apple devices, the Kindle reader and the app version on Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone and the various alternative devices such as the Nook. There's also the desktop reading option!

If you haven't so far taken the plunge into a real-time history of reviews tied together with a running commentary of the relevant Doctor Who news that tied the first five years of nuWho together (running from Rose through to The End of Time, Part Two) then now is the time – head on over the Lulu and pick up the new revised edition of Ultimate Regeneration for £12.99 or just £4.99 for the eBook!

Meanwhile, look out for a special Ultimate Regeneration giveaway for all Kasterborous readers coming very soon!

The Invisible Time Lord?

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 05:49 AM PDT

As the BBC reveal their listings for 'Week 35' (or 27th August- 2nd September, as normal people may call it), there's something missing.

While there's promises of The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the 'Comedy Prom' and a new crime drama called The Field of Blood, there's something old, new, borrowed and blue missing… Even searching for 'Hitler' doesn't help, thanks to a drama and accompanying documentary about the Nazi leader on BBC Two.

Yes, the BBC is still keeping its lips sealed over when Doctor Who will return. 'This might mean America gets it before us!' 'Maybe it won't return to British telly ever again!' 'Who just mentioned Michael Grade?!' But before you start a protest by doing something crazy like organising a riot of some kind using Facebook… Don't panic!

Even though it's not listed, it doesn't mean Doctor Who won't be back on 27th August. It just means that the BBC is tapping its nose, giving us a cheeky wink and running away, while its American cousin calls it a jerk behind its back.

The Beeb have to 'lock in' schedules 10 days before broadcast, so there's still plenty of time for them to reveal the worst-kept secret in history (perhaps apart from the 'Saxon-is-The-Master' thing). Torchwood: Miracle Day was also missing from the initial listings for Week 28, before being added just days later.

So, y'see, all is well.

And if that didn't still your palpitations, it's also been confirmed that Lee Nelson's Well Good Show is coming back. Now you can really sleep well.

He has one last stop to make on his final journey – an old friend needs his help and an old foe must be defeated. But time catches up with us all and the Doctor can delay no more.

Tom Baker in Serpent Crest

“Previously on Doctor Who…”

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 01:00 AM PDT

That's a phrase that we're not used to hearing when an episode of Doctor Who first starts. It's been a template statement for many American television serials over the years; some of you may be familiar with statements such as "previously on Buffy the Vampire Slayer" or "previously on LOST". Many shows have so many twisty turney elements to them that the audience needs a brief refresher when they start an episode to catch up on past events.

Whilst we thankfully don't have Matt Smith or Karen Gillan's voice providing this little snippet of dialogue, as it would surely make the show as self-aware as when the Doctor sported question marks on his clothes and umbrellas, BBC America has produced a brief catch up video for all those who may have fallen behind on what's been happening in series six of Doctor Who.

Whilst the plot's aren't necessarily baffling to follow, there has been a longer than usual break between episodes this year and so it's nice to be able to find out any snippets that you may have missed.

It does also help to integrate Doctor Who to the American audience that may have missed the first few episodes, using a template "catch up" video that they are used to from other shows.

Doctor Who returns to BBC America on August 27th, and to BBC One sometime in the near future…

Doctor Who: no BBC listing for 27th August (so far)

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 12:06 AM PDT

The BBC Press Office have released details of television programmes during Week 35 (27th August - 2nd September), and Doctor Who is notable by its absence from the schedules - the series has been confirmed by BBC America as being broadcast by themselves on the 27th August.

The lack of a listing does not necessarily mean that the show will not be broadcast on that Saturday, however; Torchwood: Miracle Day was initially absent from from the Week 28 listings for the week it returned, being added to the schedule listings a few days later.

BBC programming is normally finally 'locked down' 10 days before transmission.

Torchwood isn't ‘too gay'

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 10:58 PM PDT

Many years ago when anyone wanted sex on TV or film all they had to do was lose an acceptable amount of clothing and wait for either a cheeky smash cut or for the whole screen to demurely fade to black before doing the horizontal mamba

These days sexuality is as organic to a character as breathing in and out- and in our oh so knowing, gritty, realistic modernity sex should reflect the world around that character from the avaricious little plebs in Skins to the Victorian tickle your fancy of Tipping the Velvet.

So it comes as no surprise (What? I did say we were knowing) that several viewers have complained about the appropriateness of showing a gay sex scene in Torchwood: Miracle Day episode Dead of Night- leading to this rebuttal from the BBC complaints department:

"In all BBC output the portrayal of sex, or the exploration of sexual issues, should be editorially justified and treated with appropriate sensitivity. In post-watershed content, we must be able to justify the frank and realistic portrayal of sex and the exploration of themes and issues which some people might find offensive.

Captain Jack Harkness is an established character in the series. We felt the content was justified in terms of the context and character and would be within the expectations of regular viewers. We aim to depict relationships whether heterosexual or homosexual in an honest and realistic way. These scenes are not meant to cause offence."

The question shouldn't be: 'Is it appropriate to show gay sex post watershed?' Instead it should be: 'Is it appropriate to show sex scenes post watershed?' and the answer would be yes given the suffix of content and the nature of the material shown.

Regardless of the sexuality there are rules as laid out by the BBC above that govern sex on TV and that scene didn't break any of them.

While its justifiable to get angry at the incredulity of this it is also kind of sad that the BBC have to explain equality in this manner.
