| Vworp Vworp! That's the Sound of an Order! Posted: 12 Aug 2011 04:21 AM PDT Any of you out there managed to get your hands on a copy of Vworp Vworp? Maybe you don't know what that is…it's a fanzine but not just any fanzine, it's possibly the best fanzine about Doctor Who that has ever been created (Kasterborous is an online magazine so we count that in a different category)! You may not have been able to get a copy of Volume 1 (you must have seen it advertised, the front cover has a cartoon picture of all the Doctors incarnations and contained some fantastic interviews and information on the Doctor Who comic strip) but Volume 2 looks set to be just as much fun with its special articles and unique artwork. In fact the issue contains an absolute corker of an image. The team has created a fake issue of Total Film (a monthly film magazine for all those not in the know) with a cover feature on Abslom Daak, Dalek Killer – The Movie. It looks so real and so believable that you may just think you're looking at the real thing. But in order for this issue of the magazine to be shipped out, the creators need a few more orders before they can proceed. So really, you need to get an issue of Vworp Vworp as soon as possible – it's really worth doing. A labour of love has gone into this and any Doctor Who fan will surely be happy with the results. Head over to www.vworpvworp.co.uk to order your copy – you won't regret it! | ||

| Posted: 12 Aug 2011 03:21 AM PDT A quick update on the upcoming Big Finish Companion Volume 1 from writer Richard Dinnick, due in November, and news of Volume 2... "It's very exciting that the first volume of the Big Finish Companion is about to meet its public! I know that there has been great anticipation for it and I hope that the extra work we've done on it will prove worth the wait. As promised I will be signing all pre-orders and they are expected in the warehouse very soon, so I'll be preparing my quill for action! "I am also very pleased to be able to say that work is well under way on the second volume. For this I have handed over the work to professional journalist and über Big Finish fan Kenny Smith (editor of the fanzine The Finished Product). I will still be involved as editor on this second tome and hope to do as good a job on that as my editor, Mark Wright, has done on this one." To pre-order volume 1, click here. | Posted: 12 Aug 2011 01:11 AM PDT Missing Christian Cawley this week, Kasterborous podKasters Brian Terranova and James McLean take Torchwood: Miracle Day to task and ask just how inept can the team get following Escape from L.A.? With an interesting segueway into realism in writing – citing Bille Piper's interpretation of Rose Tyler in Series 2 of Doctor Who back in 2006 – the podKast focuses mainly on Miracle Day and the succession of errors and failings of the Torchwood team to take the matter seriously. Using the buttons above you can enjoy our podKast right here on Kasterborous, while the more experience podcast listeners can subscribe to out RSS feed. | Kai says Miracle Day has “the most incredible” end Posted: 12 Aug 2011 01:04 AM PDT Kai Owen has promised "the most incredible" conclusion to Miracle Day, with "exciting twists and turns still to come". "From Episode 5 on, my God, it goes into a rollercoaster ride and climaxes in the most incredible way possible," he's told the Chicago Tribune. "Only Russell T Davies could come up with it. And obviously, the [...] | ||
| Posted: 12 Aug 2011 12:17 AM PDT We all know the men who have played the Doctor. If we're being honest most of us could probably give you their names and the years during which they played most people's Time Lord of choice. If pressed we could even enter the murky waters of Doctors of an uncertain canon; Peter Cushing, Richard E Grant (twice!), Rowan Atkinson, Jim Broadbent, Hugh Grant and even Joanna Lumley. But there's a canon Doctor that everyone seems to neglect; Michael Jayston. And he did play the Doctor, whither you like it or not. Even if he did it under the guise of a Valeyard. For those of you not versed in the Classic Series or Wikipedia the Valeyard appeared throughout Series 23, giving him more appearances as the Doctor than Paul McGann. His role as Valeyard saw him constantly at odds with the 6th Doctor throughout the Trial of a Time Lord. The end of the trial saw the Master reveal him as the Doctor, albeit a dark distillation. Not unlike a certain Dream Lord we encountered in 2010. Not that I'm saying the two are linked…. It should come as no surprise that I'm a Valeyard fan. Sylvester McCoy was my Doctor, so of course I like my Doctors dark. It's a large part of what I'm enjoying about Matt Smith's interpretation of the Doctor. Michael Jayston has gone one step further than McCoy and Smith though. Rather than just hinting at the sinister side of the Doctor, he is in fact the Doctor embracing his dark side. Which in itself highlights the problem that most fans have with the idea of the Valeyard; no-one likes to accept that he has a dark side. The Doctor is meant to be the hero, the unerring moral compass, the man who steps up and proclaims "This is wrong!" I can understand how his less pure impulses growing arms and legs would unnerve fans that hold the Doctor in this light. However it's a pedestal with a very shakey leg that these fans are placing the Doctor on. This is, after all, the same man that was prepared to smash in the head of a caveman to secure his own safety (back in 1963′s 100,000 BC), gave scant regard to abandoning his friends in an attempt to escape exile and to a man who overlooked the moral dilemmas involved with genocide until he was seconds away from committing it. And if the Fourth Doctor had any qualms about the Genocide of the Daleks they weren't shared by the Seventh Doctor and whichever regeneration finally pulled the plug on them during the Time War. All the Doctors, with the possible exception of the Fifth Doctor, have had more than a hint of darkness about them. None more so than the Seventh and the Eleventh looks to be becoming more comfortable with this aspect of himself with every passing episode. So then why does the Valeyard continue to be met with such little regard? Is it because no-one referred to him as the Doctor apart from the Master? Possibly and since when was he a trustworthy source of information anyway? For anyone who's unsure of just where they stand on this issue I'd strongly recommend listening to the Big Finish audio He Jests at Scars. Here Michael Jayston reprises the role and we get to hear him as the Doctor without having to share screen time with Colin Baker. Anyway, I'll leave you with one final thought before I depart: If the Valeyard is indeed a Doctor from the future (a debate I'll refrain from for just now) and the Anthony Ainley recognised him as the Doctor does that mean the phrase should be 'Time has been rewritten' rather than 'Time can be rewritten'? | ||

| Matt Smith: ‘Amy is Sexy' Posted: 11 Aug 2011 09:32 PM PDT Today in the world of the obvious Matt Smith has told The Sun that Amy Pond is a sexy character- sighting the old 'something for the dads to watch' argument for justifying the new sexy dimension for the series. Sounding like a Sultan in a Harem Smith said:
Smith also argued that as well as being 'dark' and 'scary' it is also in the shows nature to be sexy:
Well, wonder no more Matt because thanks to Kasterborous' patented (pending) Sexy-o-meter (we're working on the name) we can tell you exactly how sexy it is…calibrating now…the answer to how sexy is it is…Peat Moss…no, wait…belt sanders…no, trying again…and it is as sexy as…Tarr Steps Bridge…sigh, give us a moment. Still, while we're trying to get the Sexy-o-meter to work, let us know what you think: which is sexier, Doctor Who or Amy Pond?
